When you hear public transportation in Nigeria, it's just something else different, tho I haven't used other countries public transportation, but I am sure if there is any country like Nigeria, it would be just a few.
Sometimes I wonder if the drivers are sleeping and eating in the same place because they all behave the same way, they are so inconsiderate and selfish, they don't value life, and they have no single human feelings, only maybe 30% of Nigerian public transport drivers behavior are reasonable.
My worst experience with public transport.
I relocated from Aba to Lagos, and I thought since Lagos is a more civilized city, things would be much better than in Aba, unfortunately, it was not what I thought that mattered, the reality became a fact to me when I started experiencing life in Lagos, and that of public transportation was the worst.
I had so many terrible experiences but let me relate just one horrible day of my life with Lagos public transportation.
One early morning I left home for work, that day was just not a good day for me, I usually take three drop of bus before getting to work and that day the three different buses just weren't a good one at all, in fact, it made that day a remarkable day because both my going and coming home from work was just a bad experience.
When I got to the first bus stop, A mini-bus was loading and I was his first passenger, so I sat in the front, he never mentioned to me that he didn't have a change to give he kept quiet, the bus took like 45mins before it got full, and I was happy because I thought the next thing is to move, the driver said we should pay before he moves the bus, I brought out the money I wanted to pay with, this man shouted at me "Madam I don't have change please come down" "Ahhhhh how will you say this after I have spent a lot of time waiting for your bus to get full" I responded, "Why not look for change from other passengers" I asked him.
This man opened his bus door and dragged me down, and another person entered and paid, he moved his bus, and I had to go and also be the first person in the other bus loading, it was so frustrating.
The second bus loaded and we left, I was already late for work, but when I got to the next bus stop I got another bus going to my office, immediately he finished loading a group of men who said they were from the bus union came and offloaded us from the bus, that was another terrible experience because we had already paid and we couldn't find the driver to get our money back, at that point I was about to 😭 cry, my boss has sent me a message to notify me that I will serve some discipline for coming late, not even asking what happened.
I managed to get to work that day, and it was like I was beating, I thought I had enough for the day, not knowing that my going home would be the worst.
After work
After spending hours loading the bus all of us never knew there was no fuel in the bus, and the driver knew but wanted to get money for fuel from us, immediately he moved, he drove just 5 minutes the bus went off and the driver came down took an empty five-liter keg and ran off without saying anything to anyone else, we were at the middle where we can't go back neither can we get another bus so we have no choice than to wait for him to get fuel and drive us to our destination.
We only knew it was a fuel issue because he took the empty keg, and we spent an hour and 30 minutes waiting for the driver to come. I was hungry and scared because the place we parked wasn't safe. I just remembered what I faced in the morning.
When this man finally came back with the little fuel he bought, everyone was just looking at him, expecting him to at least apologize after he added the fuel, he drove off, and someone in the bus now said to him "Oga, you couldn't even apologize for just abandoning us here for hours?" His response will shock you.
"Were you expecting me to use my urine to drive the bus before, did I leave you people just for fun?" I wasn't surprised anyway because public transport drivers are something else, especially in Lagos state.
Everyone was just so upset, but there was nothing to do to say all you could and allow him to drive you home.
I got home by 10: p.m. that day. I was so exhausted, and I needed to cook and get ready for the next day's work.
This is just one of the horrible experiences, there are many of them.
My Good experience with public transport.
The only good experience I ever had with public transportation was one early morning when I was going to work and I left my purse at home, there was no way to pay the driver, I had already gotten to the middle of the journey before I discovered that I left my purse at home, after explaining my situation to the driver, he asked me if I could transfer money from my bank account so that he will give me cash equivalent, that was just a big relief, I transferred money and he gave me cash equivalent, that was just my savoir that day because even coming back from work would have been very difficult for me.
Public transportation in Lagos state can cause mental health problems if you don't care about your mental health.
