Procrastination is one habit many people struggle with across the globe and it would be fair to say that we have all been its victim at point in life. We hesitate to do something at the right time for silly reasons and boom, the opportunity just waves goodbye to us in the blink of an eye.
Getting rid of this habit seems challenging even though it’s not because I believe many of us aren’t just serious about cutting ties with procrastination. It always amazes me how we make up our minds to quit after bearing a huge consequence and the next minute, we are back procrastinating again. Many of the times I have procrastinated didn’t end well for me but there was one that I didn’t see coming which ended up affecting me badly.
I am not someone who likes splashing money on a gadget whenever I have one working and honestly I don’t think that’s a bad habit. I always wait till something isn’t working anymore before going for a new one so I can use a gadget for more than 3 years or more.
That year, I was using a Tecno K9 and really loved the phone for different reasons. All of a sudden, it started acting up; it would just freeze for a few minutes, go blank and come back to life. It continued like that for weeks and the intervals between when it froze kept increasing.
I wasn’t bothered since the phone was still working but my brother and girlfriend always warned me about it since I had used it for a while already. They believed it would pack off one day and wouldn’t come back to life as usual but I turned a deaf ear to every warning. I kept telling them that I will get another phone but not now since the K9 still works.
At a point, I thought of getting another phone just in case the unexpected happened but I always postponed it whenever the thought crossed my mind. I met with a phone engineer who couldn’t pin the fault on any component. He advised me to sell the phone as scrap and I just said, okay.
I became used to the phone freezing routine and when it does its thing, I just put it aside waiting for it to come back to life but unfortunately for me, it froze completely and never came back at a very crucial moment.
Earlier that week, a family friend sent me a link to apply for a job and he stated that I should be prepared for an interview the following week according to his friend who works in the company. I spoke to the person after sending my CV and he said the same thing so I had my mind fixed for the coming week.
Late on Thursday evening, the phone didn’t come up and I felt silly for not taking advice but little did I know that the big consequences were waiting ahead. I spent the rest of that Thursday without a phone and on Friday morning, I had to go to the bank to withdraw cash because I don’t use a debit card; I preferred using my bank app.
After waiting so much time at the bank, I went to the popular phone market known as computer village with the hope of finding a good second hand phone but after touring the whole village, I couldn’t buy one because there wasn’t much difference between the prices of both the second hand and new phones.
I went into the bank again to withdraw more money enough for a new phone and I got one. I unboxed it at the store, inserted my sim card and didn’t use it since I needed to charge it full first.
Upon arriving home, I charged the phone properly. It wasn’t long before my brother called and told me to call my uncle because he had been trying to reach me.
I called him and he was really mad at me for making him waste an opportunity.
He mentioned that his friend informed him that I didn’t show up for the interview and I explained that I wasn’t even aware due to my phone condition. He said the interview was later scheduled for Friday morning and I was speechless. I had to apologize before asking if there was anything that could be done about it but there was nothing anyone could do to fix things.
I hated myself for procrastinating about the phone and had to live with the guilt for weeks because the job pay was thrice my current salary. After that experience, I vowed never to procrastinate again but didn’t keep to my vow.

This was a powerful and relatable piece—procrastination really does have a sneaky way of costing us more than we imagine.
That's right, it keeps pushing us to the point where we end up regretting our actions. We've all had the experience several times and I believe that we will make changes if we really want to.

Thanks for the curation, enjoy the rest of your day.
Procrastination is really a cankerworm that destroys
Indeed, it's a destroyer we permit to ruin things for ourselves.
