The Uncontrollable Fury of Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are one of the most terrible things to experience, sometimes when I put on the news or scroll through my feeds and see videos and pictures of what other countries are going through when facing some terrible natural disaster, the recent wildfire in LA for example destroying lives and properties rendering people homeless, it always saddening watching these scenes, and more saddening knowing that they cannot be prevented or controlled so as not to cause major damages and lost of lives because they are caused by nature, I guess if they were, an advanced country like USA would have definitely put preventive measures against such a disaster.

Some countries also experience the same terrible ones like earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tornadoes, etc all of which are deadly and leave long-lasting negative effect that takes years to get over with. Although we don't experience all of these in my country, the common natural disaster we experience is flooding, which has displaced so many homes, leading to loss of lives and livelihood, and also caused water-borne diseases such as cholera in the affected states, I've not experienced such kind of major flooding myself, but have relatives who have, I remember when my uncle was advised not to build his house in a riverine area, because of flood cases that have occurred in that area in the past, but he paid deaf ears and went ahead with his building project, I guess it's because of how low cost it was to build a home there, to cut the long story short few years after moving to his newly built home, the devilish rain like they like to refer to it started, this is the kind of rain that rains heavily for days and almost seems like it won't stop, the rivers around overflowed entering and filling up their houses, imagine buildings being engulfed with water, he had to run for his life with his family when he saw that the water could not be controlled, leaving all of his properties, I watched videos of cars floating, some people got carried by water and drowned in their bid to escape when it was too late, it was indeed a sad time for the country, fortunately for my uncle, his life and that of his family were spared, and they had to live with us for some copouple of years, starting their lives all over because they were traumatized, my uncle regretted not heeding to people's advice then, his house and other houses within that environment were closed and marked unlivbvable because of recurring flood in that area.

Lagos, my state of residence is also known for experiencing floods, the closes flooding experience I witnessed one time was when I was on my way back from church one Sunday, unfortunately, the dry roads I had passed that morning were flooded after a heavy downpour, the poor drainage system in the state is most likely the cause of this type of flooding, we couldn't cross the road using any vehicle, so we had to walk through the flooded road or use a canoe but there was only one canoe conveying people to the other side of the road, which wasn't enough for everybody, I can remember a man telling me to spread my legs apart while walking through so the heavy current of the water don't forcibly sweep me away, as few people have been victim to such that same day, it was one of the scariest moment of my life, that I let a sigh of relief after reaching the other end and I don't pray to experience such again, before the drainage system got constructed around that area, whenever it rains, I stay put indoor and don't dare even going to church, thank God for the new government that paid a listening ear to the citizens and end that flood situation fo us.
