During years of the early 2000s, my state, Lagos state in Nigeria is often recognized for its heavy flooding because of the poor drainage system and heavy rainfall. Lagos is a state surrounded by Water. On the highland here, so many houses are built on water and they look exclusive, I can’t even imagine someone from outside the country might describe Lagos Nigeria as a zoo or Village because so much luxury exists in this state, and many exclusive men, but there is often one problem back that year, which is Flood.

When I was small, When there was heavy rain people started to panic, and everyone came outside to check if the drainage was free. This act was very common, it was like people were surviving then. The main reason is that most times people pour waste material into the drainage and this often causes a heavy blockage to everything around, like plastic waste, Nylon, and other random materials, so when this thing gets too much it blocks the passage of the wastewater, and they won’t be proper flow of the water when there is heavy rainfall, so the water returns and spread all around the community.
This experience was almost constant every year and it happened for more than one day until a governor stepped in and gradually made some adjustments to this system.
Natural disasters are not something that can be stopped but can be prevented from causing further harm, for example, in my state rain often causes heavy floods and rain can’t be controlled unless it stops willingly. So there was a proper removal of the waste product blocking the drainage system and the road and drainage were brought intact. This system has reduced a lot of flood harm. I remember that no matter how tall the house might be water would enter except it was a two-story building then it could enter the down floor, people often cry when this happens, water lifts a big freezer on the road, I saw it live.

Flood is a very common natural disaster in my state, some even drowned during the early years of 2000+, one way people prevent this is to try to clean their drainage early during rainy seasons because rain ain’t friendly with us.
I have once been a victim of a natural disaster, I was almost drowned, thank God I knew how to swim, we were passing a canal then coming back from church a shortcut, so my sis bag fell on the water and was already moving towards the middle of the canal, I wanted to grab it fast before it moves faster, as I took 3 steps closer, I entered inside, but I had to swim to grab something because of the heavy pressure then, I later was able to recover my self from the water by myself, it wasn’t easy, everyone was scared then. Since then, we never passed the canal shortcut to home when rain falls.

Some of this disaster is caused by some people action, imagine blocking the drainage with waste
