The Power Struggle

Even to this date, both my kids and those of my neighbors still scream in excitement whenever our power is being restored. There's no need to shy away from telling this truth because we kept experiencing this epileptic kind of power supply in my area over the years.

I live in Lagos State, Nigeria, and it will interest you to know that as long as you are not wealthy enough to live in certain areas in Lagos, which only the wealthy ones can afford, then you are in for constant power issues.Places like Royal Gardens, Victoria Gardens, Chevron Area, Ikoyi, Banana Island, etc., do not understand the challenges associated with electric power supply, which the low earners in the state face constantly due to the location they live in. Of course that's how God designed the world; everyone cannot be wealthy. Unfortunately, the average individual faces the difficulties of life more; it is what it is.

There are many problems with the power supply over here. But I am not surprised because the service is from the government. They are always known for their nonchalant attitude, selfishness, and their greedy nature. If I am rich enough, I wouldn't be needing the services of the government when it comes to power supply because they always disappoint. Just imagine a friend posted this text below in her WhatsApp status a few minutes before I started writing this prompt.

Imagine almost one year of total blackout. Funny enough, her location is just an hour different from mine. I am surprised their own power issue is up to this extent. This is because, once a location has transformer issues, it takes forever before it will be fixed. If it's private industry that runs power supply in my country, the services will be something better but more costly than what we spend today on power, which is fine as long as we have steady light without running a generator every now and then, spending high on petrol.

I use a prepaid meter in my home, and that's why even if I don't have power supply for a long time, I run my generator and have my meter subscription intact. However, for some persons around me using direct light and paying estimated bills to the PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria), it's not always funny because whether power or no power, they are still being charged monthly for products they didn't make use of. It's sad. Families who can afford solar panels are the ones who have escaped the power supply challenges in my location.

I do not have a steady power supply; the PHCN sector is never consistent over here, and it's always annoying. Nowadays, we virtually use power for most activities, and it's disappointing when we always experience no or low level of power supply, making us spend very high on this expensive petrol each day.

If money were not an object, my preference would be solar panels. I will forget about the PHCN in my country completely and go for the high capacity of solar capable of taking charge of all electronics in my home. By doing this, I have secured myself a steady power supply devoid of dramas like what we usually experience these days.

Overall, the government has the capacity to do better when it comes to power supply, but as usual, they don't care; they only increased the tariff and kept failing on their promises towards power supply. If every state in the country will be given the opportunity to run power issues themselves, I feel the challenges so far might be reduced, and the citizens will begin to enjoy power as it is supposed to. However, I read recently that some experts are expressing concerns about states taking over the electricity market, but I feel it will be better than what we have today.

The issue of light in our country has become something else, at the moment we have not had light in my area for days now. The annoying part is we are not using a prepaid meter because my landlord has refused to install it for us and we cannot install it ourselves because it will carry the landlord's information. Nepa just keeps increasing their bills every month.

Just like you said the best solution is solar panels but the money for it is also high.

It's well with us

Nepa are never going to fail when it comes to making sure that the poor citizens of Nigeria , suffer power outages. I can imagine the constant contribution to fetch or pump water this is really sad
