How far I have come

Life has been so good; that's an undeniable fact; looking at where I am today and how I started my journey into becoming who I wanted to be, it has been a lot of hard work, tolerance, focus, and perseverance, which yielded a good result. Growing through all the failures and mistakes and learning to become a better person was a lot of work, and I'm happy I put in such effort because it pays. During the downtime, I asked myself countless questions such as, will I be able to do it? What would people say? What if I got it wrong? Is this goal achievable? If I take this step, what will be the outcome? Amidst many others, some of these questions were answered while some remained unanswered.

At every point in time when I make any decision and it backfires, I do take responsibility for the consequences, not condemning myself but just looking for a way to improve and never repeat the same mistake twice. It's appropriate for parents to make decisions for their children at some point in life; that's when they aren't old enough to make decisions on their own. Although some parents still make decisions for their children at Adulthood I don't think that's right. The best thing at that time is to guide them towards the right part and correct them when they are making mistakes. Well, my parents gave me the opportunity and right to make decisions myself and stand by whatever result it gives in return, and that's taking responsibility.

My decision

I am the author of my story, and I go to my parents with what I have in mind to do; my parents were only there to support me and offer me the advice I might need to forge ahead and in the right way. Where I am today is a result of my decisions.

Are there any regrets?

Looking at my past mistakes, I can say there are regrets, there are times I wished I had taken another turn of approach than the one I took but one thing I'm grateful for is that even if it was a wrong turn, it didn't broke me, it only strengthens me and gave me new ideas. I believe these are the little things that contribute to experiences in life. I fell, rose up, and continued the journey; I never stopped, and though there was a delay, one way or the other, I was able to get my way back on the right path. A single mistake has cost many people a lot but for the few of us that was privileged to overcome the obstacles, it was a win for us.

The big dream

Every child has a big dream; some achieved it, some achieved something closer but not actually what they wanted, while some didn't actualize that dream at all. You might be wondering which category I belonged to. Well, as a child my dream was to become a renowned medical doctor with several different success stories accredited to my name. This was what I desired so greatly while growing up, but reality hit, and I couldn't bring that dream into actualization. I tried my best to achieve something closer to it, and that made my nursing journey. The big dream was partially fulfilled, but I'm not losing hope yet; the table can turn around in my favor shortly.

Long-term goals

As humans, everyone wants a fulfilled life and so do I. I had goals I set from my teenage days till adulthood, and gracefully, some had been achieved while some are still pending. They aren't pending because I forget them, the condition is not just yet perfect for their actualization. Many things can serve as an obstruction to the achievement of some goals, such as geographical factors, family, finance, lack of focus, or determination, to mention but few, and some of these factors have contributed to why some of my goals are still pending.

Strategies to achievement

To the goals that had been achieved, it demanded a lot such as:

  • Self-discipline
  • Sacrifice
  • Focus
  • Determination
  • Tolerance
  • Perseverance
  • High self-esteem
  • Self-confidence
With all these listed factors, I was able to stand the test of time, care less about what people think or say about me, learned from my mistakes and failures, think of a way forward, let go of fear and push through all hurdles to achieve success.

Reasons why some goals remained unachievable

In the part of the world where I belong, only the rich, I mean the wealthy, have it easy. For the middle class or less privileged, it is a war. Many of those roaming in the streets today also have dreams and goals of becoming someone successful in society, but they are limited. They couldn't access the wings to fly; some strive to make their dreams become a reality while some die with the dream, not seeing the light of realization. That's how bad it can be when someone has no opportunity to actualize one's dreams. Family background, as well as the country's economic status, contributes greatly to why some goals remained unachievable. I remember during my delay in getting admission into a higher institution, family members gave my parents different devices they couldn't give to their children, but my parents paid no attention to them all.

In situations like this, many parents give in to pressure from other family members forgetting their children have their lives to live and they cannot decide how they would live it for the cause of what people will say they pressure their children into doing what they never wanted which might dashed their dreams and wasted their goals. Apart from this, the financial background of a family is also very important. Some didn't take the wrong advice, but they don't have the resources to support their children's dreams or goals, and when there is no money, there is no idea.

Talking about a country's economic status cannot be overemphasized; in developed countries, their citizens thrive more because life is easier for them there. They have every necessary basic amenity readily provided by their government to aid their processes into becoming whoever they desire to be. The government is always willing to support talents, skills, ideas, and innovations that can bring development to the country. While doing this, such individuals with great ideas and talents are fulfilling their dreams and achieving their goals, which benefits both parties in the long run. But in a country where the citizens lack support from the government, neither is there room for opportunities. To succeed in such a country will be a huge task, and this is why many citizens in underdeveloped countries travel out to their countries in search of greener pastures where they can actualize their dreams and achieve their goals. If the government made available every necessary support for their citizens, there wouldn't be a country battling with underdevelopment in this century.

you are right to say that it is totally unacceptable for parent to influence a child's decision on their choice of career. it is good that you learn from your mistakes, you might not know blessed you are as having this skill is desirable to all.
