Procrastination: a ruining habit

Procrastination is a disease; if not well treated, it could lead to damnation. It is a habit of delaying tasks despite knowing it may lead to negative consequences. Procrastination can develop due to laziness and a nonchalant attitude. Some people have it registered in their brains, and it has become a great part of their lives, which is now difficult to defeat. Procrastination is one kind of addiction that affects many lives today, leaving what should have been done instantly till later when it might not be useful again or hold less value.

Procrastination is a habit that is being developed gradually due to some reasons. First is the fear of failure or perfectionism. Some care so much about what is being said about them, therefore they don't want to make a mistake, they always want whatever they do to be perfect to avoid people's complaints but one thing I've understood in life is that as humans, we are not perfect and we can't be because we are bound to make mistakes. We can only try to do things right. While there are people who fear failing even before starting. They are always conscious, doubting their abilities to succeed; they tend to procrastinate until they see a driving force that would push them into prompt action.

Another is the lack of motivation, just as I said earlier, some people can undergo any task either for themselves or others without being motivated. Such people need a driving force, and that's motivation; they need people around to give them a heads up in whatever they want to do. I have a brother who's dealing with this habit, he can't possibly do anything without being motivated. He always finds one excuse or the other to postpone whatever he is supposed to do. He was given an assignment in his coaching center on Monday, and he had been postponing it till this morning. He did it today because I reminded him and insisted that he had it done before leaving home. I'm sure if the assignment had been collected the day it was given, he wouldn't have been able to submit it because he didn't do it all because he chose to do it later, which he kept postponing.

Feeling overwhelmed is also one of the reasons for procrastination. When one is undergoing emotional stress and mental burden that makes it difficult to think straight or have a clear mind to make decisions. Some tasks from school and work sometimes put lots of pressure on me, not being able to do all I wanted to do in a day or during a period causing me to leave my tasks undone, though my mind will be there, and that force I need to put my body into action will be unavailable at that time, making me procrastinate. When there are too many things to do, such as tasks, responsibilities, or emotions at times, it contributes to forgetting what should be done and wanting to attend to it later. It happens to me sometimes when I've overworked myself, feel fatigued, or am not in a good mood.

Poor time management is also a reason for procrastination. Twenty-four hours is not enough to do most of the things we wish to do which means one must plan his or her time to achieve most of the tasks. Due to this reason, we tend to leave some things undone, planning to do them next time. This is why good time management is essential to curb the habit of procrastination. Planning one's schedule on a daily, weekly, and even monthly basis, to know what task to take on per time to reduce stress and curb the habit of procrastinating.

Finally, temptation and distraction are also reasons for procrastination; as humans, there are times we want to perform a task, and a distraction will set in, such as calls, which would stop one at that moment from completing such task and resuming back to it might be impossible. That's when one decides to do it later instead of completing it at that instant. If all these reasons are looked into and worked on, doing the right things at the right time wouldn't be a problem, and completing tasks when necessary would be an achieved goal.

Thanks for your time and your comments will be appreciated.

Well said. Good time management would go a long way as well as avoiding distractions and temptations. Once these are done, procrastination would be easily defeated.
