Power supply in my area

Electricity supply is a major factor in a city, community, or country. It has a big influence on the development of the area because, especially in this era where technology has taken control, power supply is needed to keep everything running. Imagine having a door controller that operates technologically (a digital door) and there is no power to keep it running. Imagine having CCTV installed in the house, and there is no power to keep it functioning. The unavailability of power supply hinders the usage of things like these, hence hindering development in the area.

Right from the days I became sensible as a child to this moment in my life, I have never been to those cities or areas where they have constant electricity. I have lived in places where we jubilate whenever electricity is restored, and whenever the electricity stays for more than 24 hours, everyone becomes marveled and starts wondering because it could mean that something (usually something negative) has happened, which is why the electricity has stayed longer than its usual one hour or thirty minutes. This one hour or thirty minutes is not something we experience on a regular basis; it comes once in a while. It is what we grew up with, and we have become accustomed to it. We no longer worry about electricity; we enjoy it whenever it comes, and whenever it does not, there is no problem either. After all, it is more like a government-managed system, even though the companies that own power distribution in my city are privately owned.

Most of us have resorted to using generators to get power supply for our homes or offices. In my home, we have two generators that provide us with power. We have one specifically for pumping water, while the smaller one is used just to power the television and charge our gadgets. If we were to depend on the availability of public electricity, then we would have to go for weeks and months without getting water in our homes, and this same issue would affect charging our gadgets as well. Imagine that kind of situation!

We spend heavily to keep these generators running whenever we need to use them, especially when it comes to buying petrol, and for some years now, the price of fuel has skyrocketed. But what can we do? We cannot decide not to use the generators anymore simply because the cost of fuel is high. How would we pump water, or how would we charge our gadgets? It is inevitable!

Even in this very poor supply of electricity, we still pay for electricity. It is just that we do not pay on a monthly basis because we do not get power on a regular basis. We only receive electricity bills whenever there is electricity supply. Sometimes, we pay once in three months or once in two months, depending on how electricity was supplied in that particular period.

This poor electricity supply is a major issue in Nigeria because a good number of cities and villages are lagging behind, which in turn affects the development of such places.

I wish the issue can be solved once and for all. Imagine all the stress and time wasted. One could have achieved much more.
