Another clear example, as in the case of NIN, of an anti-commercial band that ends up surprisingly triumphing in style. Undoubtedly Tool were in the right place at the right time. The American music scene and the record industry had taken a tremendous turn in the early 90's thanks to the massive success of Nirvana. The alternative scene was finally starting to be something palpable and real, that was there and that was beginning to attract the attention of record labels. And right there was Tool, a band of strange sonorities, intriguing paranoias and dark psychedelia on the surface.
Otro claro ejemplo, como en el caso de NIN, de grupo a todas luces anticomerciales que termina sorprendentemente triunfando por todo lo alto. Sin duda Tool estaban en el lugar adecuado en el momento exacto. La escena musical americana y la industria del disco habían pegado un tremendo vuelco a principios de los 90 gracias al multitudinario éxito de Nirvana. La escena alternativa comenzaba a ser finalmente algo palpable y real, que estaba ahí y que comenzaba a llamar la atención de las discográficas. Y justo ahí estaban Tool, una banda de sonoridades extrañas, paranoias intrigantes y oscuras psicodelia a flor de piel.
The EP, of six songs “Opiate” was a breath of fresh air in the underground, public and critics agreed in praising an original group like few others and that opened the way for them. A year later they ventured out with their first full-length album. If they were not yet “best-seller fodder”, something fundamental in these times for the maintenance of many artists, they uncovered with “Undertow”, a totally inaccessible and complex album, full of their typical instrumental dalliances and their unhinged passages of restrained rage and melancholic undertones.
El EP, de seis temas “Opiate” fue un soplo de aire fresco dentro del underground, publico y critica coincidieron en alabar a un grupo original como pocos y eso les abrió el camino. Un año mas tarde se aventuran con su primera obra completa. Si todavía no eran ni mucho menos lo que se dice “carne de superventas”, algo fundamental en los tiempos que corren para el mantenimiento de muchos artistas, se destapan con “Undertow”, un disco totalmente inaccesible y complejo, lleno de sus típicos devaneos instrumentales y sus desquiciados pasajes de rabia contenida y trasfondo melancolico.
That was almost a commercial suicide that nevertheless worked well thanks to the impact of the artistic and gloomy video clip of “Prison Sex”, but when three years passed without a new album, the fans who had won already feared the possible disintegration of the band. Then came the surprise. “Aenima” was a hermetic work from its very cover, dark, depressive, disturbing, piercing and frightening as the music behind it. But the musical panorama had already undergone a complete metamorphosis, and Tool fit perfectly in the rock world, between the already descending furor for grunge pessimism and the taste for new trends, the more avant-garde the better.
Aquello era casi un suicidio comercial que sin embargo funciono bien gracias al impacto del artístico y lúgubre videoclip de “Prison Sex”, pero cuando pasaron tres años sin nueva entrega discográfica, los fans que habían ganado ya se temian la mas que posible desintegración de la banda. Entonces llego la sorpresa. “Aenima” era una obra hermetica desde su misma portada, oscura, depresiva, inquietante, punzante y temible como la música que contenía tras ella. Pero el panorama musical ya había sufrido una metamorfosis plena, y Tool encajaban perfectamente en el mundo del rock, entre el ya descendiente furor por el pesimismo grunge y el gusto por las nuevas tendencias, cuanto mas vanguardistas mejor.
The album became not only a must-have album of the 90's, but also an authentic sales success, which led Tool to become an “alternative” sensation in the United States. The festival that represents par excellence the “underground” Yankee scene, the Lolapalooza of the father of the roll, Perry Farrell, receives them with open arms as headliners adsolutos, making them definitely one of the greatest exponents of the new trends in rock. They cross borders without any problem with a work that in another time would surely have been relegated to oblivion.
El álbum se erigió no solo como un plástico imprescindible de los 90, sino como un autentico éxito de ventas, que llevo a Tool a convertirse en una sensación “alternativa” de los States. El festival que representa por excelencia la escena “underground” yanqui, el Lolapalooza de el padre del rollo, Perry Farrell, les recibe con los brazos abiertos como cabezas de cartel adsolutos, convirtiéndoles definitivamente en uno de los máximos exponentes de las nuevas tendencias en el rock. Traspasan fronteras sin problema alguno con una obra que en otro tiempo seguramente habría quedado relegada al olvido.

So much is their perfectionism and their taste for relative anonymity, that they prefer to get involved in the recording of their paranoid videoclips than to perform live, as they recently demonstrated when they cancelled a concert in our country to record one of their promotional videos, true frenoptic short films that our “colleagues” at Mtv like to program.
Su popularidad se vio además acentuada por su pasotismo con la prensa, y la actitud ya cultivada por otros grandes del incipiente submundo metalico, como Kurt Cobain o Trent Reznor, de no solo no querer convertirse en rockstars, sino de intentar ser todo lo contrario y pasar lo mas desapercibidos posible, una formula que parece dar buenos frutos, pues asi aumentas el interés y la fascinación de los fans por todo lo que haces, ya que al suministrar tus creaciones y apariciones con cuentagotas sabes que estas van a acaparar toda la atención.
Hasta tal punto llega su perfeccionismo y su gusto por el relativo anonimato, que prefieren enfrascarse en la grabación de sus paranoicos videoclips que actuar en directo, como recientemente demostraron al cancelar un concierto en nuestro país para facturar uno de sus videos promocionales, verdaderos cortometrajes frenopaticos que pese a todo gustan de programar nuestros “colegas” de la Mtv.
“Lateralus” has been their latest album release, a work for some much weaker than the brilliant ‘Aenima’ and for others a new wonder. Opinions aside, this new album has once again consolidated them as unbeatable artists both in sales and creativity, and in a few weeks they had already sold a million copies in the United States. The balloon of their fame and recognition continues to swell, and apparently without danger of bursting, but on the contrary, with a tendency to continue flying, and very high.
“Lateralus” ha sido su ultimo lanzamiento discográfico, un trabajo para algunos mucho mas flojo que el brillante “Aenima” y para otros una nueva maravilla. Opiniones aparte, este nuevo álbum les ha vuelto a consolidar como unos artistas imbatibles tanto en ventas como en creatividad, y en pocas semanas ya habían despachado el millón de copias en los States. El globo de su fama y reconocimiento sigue hinchandose, y al parecer sin peligro a estallar, sino todo lo contrario, con tendencia a seguir volando, y muy alto.
