To the name of one of the most dangerous felines also responds one of the most savage metal bands to reach mass recognition. Their role in the evolution of the hard sounds in the last 12 years is elemental, and without them we might not be finding today such heartbreaking and corrosive proposals as those that are appearing in the metal universe. In 1990, “Cowboys From Hell”, an abrasive plastic of unusual fierceness showed the way to the new generations, who had just discovered a forceful sound like few others. But things had been very different before. Pantera had been active since the early 80's, as the band of the two brothers with Kiss and Black Sabbath crazes, Diamond “Dimebag” Darrel and Vinnie Paul.

Su papel en el devenir de los sonidos duros en los últimos 12 años es elemental, y sin ellos tal vez no estaríamos hoy encontrándonos con propuestas tan desgarradoras y corrosivas como las que están apareciendo en el universo metalico. En 1990, “Cowboys From Hell”, un abrasivo plástico de fiereza inusual mostraba el camino a las nuevas generaciones, que acababan de descubrir un sonido contundente como pocos. Pero antes las cosas habían sido muy distintas. Pantera llevaba en activo desde principios de los 80, como la banda de los dos hermanos tejados pirados por Kiss y Black Sabbath, Diamond “Dimebag” Darrel y Vinnie Paul.
Their first works, nowadays untraceable collector's items, were far from the overwhelming style they would later develop, and that's why they are almost always ignored in the band's biographies. “Metal Magic”, ‘Projects In The Jungle’ and ‘I am The Night’ did not offer anything special enough for that combo to stand out in a decade when heavy bands were coming out from under the rocks. A vocalist with an imposing physique and a booming, booming voice was to cross their path. He answered to the name of Philip Anselmo, Phil for his friends, and with him they would record “Power Metal” in 1988, an album still distant from the later paths of the band, more framed by then in the metal of the time.
Sus primeros trabajos, hoy inencontrables piezas de coleccionistas, distaban mucho del apabullante estilo que luego desarrollarían, y por eso casi siempre se obvian en las biografias de la banda. “Metal Magic”, “Projects In The Jungle” y “I am The Night” no ofrecían nada lo suficientemente especial como para que aquel combo destacara en una década en la que las bandas de heavy salian hasta de debajo de las piedras. Un vocalista de imponente físico y voz cafre y retumbante se iba a cruzar en su camino. Respondia al nombre de Philip Anselmo, Phil para los amigos, y con el iban a grabar en 1988 “Power Metal”, un disco todavía distante de los posteriores derroteros del grupo, mas enmarcable por entonces en el metal de la época.
Can you imagine Pantera with backcombed hair? Well, that's how they appeared on the cover of that album. Everybody has a past. But the change was going to perplex more than one. The potential of the group, although untapped, was there, and Atlantic Records added them to their ranks. The decade of the 90's was going to be inaugurated with a prophetic hit of these “cowboys from hell”. Sound as compact as a rock, red-hot riffs, throbbing drums and a singer of unusual brutality.
Pantera was to become the new sensation of America, a really important and evolutionary group in the rock scene with “Vulgar Display Of Power”. They become absolute standards of the imminent sonic corrosion, the punch that the guitarist received on the cover of that album was comparable to the shock that the ears suffered before that time bomb. In spite of being such a visceral proposal, so hard, the public was captivated by the band, and their records reached millionaire figures, turning the scene upside down and showing the new recipe to produce incandescent metal.
¿Os imaginais a Pantera con peinados cardados? Pues asi aparecían en la portada de aquel disco. Todo el mundo tiene un pasado. Pero el cambio iba a dejar perplejo a mas de uno. El potencial del grupo, aunque sin explotar definitivamente, estaba ahí, y Atlantic Records les añaden a sus filas. La década de los 90 se iba a inagurar con un trallazo profetico de estos “cowboys del infierno”. Sonido compacto como una roca, riffs al rojo vivo, batería trepidante y un cantante de brutalidad inusitada.
Pantera se iba a convertir en la nueva sensación de America, en un grupo realmente importante y evolucionista del panorama rockero con “Vulgar Display Of Power”. Se tornan estandartes absolutos de la inminente corrosión sónica, el puñetazo que recibia el guitarrista en la portada de dicho álbum era equiparable al shock que sufrían los oídos ante aquella bomba de relojería. Pese a ser una propuesta tan visceral, de tanta dureza, el publico quedo prendado de la banda, y sus discos alcanzaban cifras millonarias, dando un vuelco a la escena y mostrando la nueva receta para facturar metal incandescente.
Their shows become spectacles of limitless sonic violence, and their reputation grows by leaps and bounds among the youth of all countries. So much is the status achieved that with “Far Beyond Driven” they climb up to the number 1 of the Yankee lists, although the work represents a step more towards a diabolic decibelic saturation. They were by their own merits “the band” of the 90's as far as metal is concerned. Thousands of bands were willing to follow their teachings, and the fruits would not take long to pay off. Millions of kids proudly and defiantly wore Pantera's name on their T-shirts.
Sus shows se convierten en espectáculos de violencia sonora sin limite alguno, y su reputación crece a pasos de gigante entre la juventud de todos los países. Tanto es el estatus logrado que con “Far Beyond Driven” escalan hasta el n°1 de las listas yanquis, pese a que el trabajo represente un paso mas hacia una diabólica saturación decibelica. Eran por meritos propios “la banda” de los 90 en lo que a metal se refiere. Miles de grupos estaban dispuestos a seguir sus enseñanzas, y los frutos no tardarían en dar resultado. Millones de chavales lucian en sus camisetas orgullosos y desafiantes el nombre de Pantera.
“The Great Southern Trendkill” was a compositional step backwards due to the inner conflict of Anselmo, a man who had achieved with his stage savagery and his vocal torrent to be recognized as one of the most charismatic frotman of the scene. His dabbling with drugs almost had a tragic end when the singer was literally dead for several seconds for having crossed the line in a flirtation with heroin.
“The Great Southern Trendkill” fue un paso atrás a nivel compositivo fruto del conflicto interior a nivel compositivo fruto del conflicto interior de Anselmo, un hombre que había conseguido con su salvajismo escénico y su torrente vocal el ser reconocido como uno de los frotman mas carismáticos del rollo. Sus escarceo con las drogas por poco tienen un final trágico cuando el cantante estuvo varios segundos literalmente muerto por haberse pasado de la raya en un flirteo con la heroína.
Fortunately, before the band looked for a replacement (because honestly, no one can fill Anselmo's gap in the band) and back to the world of the living, Pantera's voice came to his senses, asked for forgiveness, and focused on work, giving again concerts of ordago until the arrival in the new millennium of his last studio album, which has returned to be a vein of sales and has returned to the public to the fiercest Pantera since “Far Beyond Driven”, with an impeccable collection of pieces of damaging and scratching thrash that responds to the name of “Reinventing The Steel”. Despite rumors that he was out of the band (partly because he is continuously involved in parallel projects) Anselmo has declared his intention to continue leading a group that is already an invincible colossus and a basic reference within the contemporary guitar “noise”. Pantera will surely continue to “reinvent steel” at every attempt.
Por suerte, antes de que la banda le buscara inútilmente un sustituto (pues sinceramente, nadie puede cubrir el hueco de Anselmo en el grupo) y de vuelta al mundo de los vivos, la voz de Pantera recapacita, pide perdón, y se centra en el trabajo, dando de nuevo conciertos de órdago hasta la llegada en el nuevo milenio de su ultimo disco de estudio, que ha vuelto a suponer un filon de ventas y ha devuelto al publico a los Pantera mas fieros desde “Far Beyond Driven”, con una impecable colección de piezas de tralla dañina y rayante que responde al nombre de “Reinventing The Steel”. Pese a los rumores que le colocaban fuera de la banda (en parte por estar continuamente involucrado en proyectos paralelos) Anselmo ha declarado su intención de seguir al frente de un grupo que es ya un coloso invencible y una referencia básica dentro del “ruido” guitarrero contemporáneo. De seguro que Pantera seguirá “reinventando el acero” en cada intento.
