Few bands throughout history have achieved massive success with their debut album. Even many of the absolute greats have had to wait at least until their second album to establish themselves as absolute stars. Van Halen, Guns N'Roses or Rage Against The Machine are some of those rare cases of immediate success, although now we must add to the list the “chart-busting” and very young Californians Linkin Park.
Pocas bandas a lo largo de la historia han logrado un éxito multitudinario con su álbum de debut. Incluso muchas de las más absolutamente grandes han tenido que esperar por lo menos al segundo disco para consolidarse como absolutas estrellas. Van Halen, Guns N´Roses o Rage Against The Machine son algunos de esos extraños casos de inmediato éxito, aunque ahora debemos añadir a la lista a los “revienta-charts” y jovencísimos californianos Linkin Park.
Despite all the opinions about the North American quintet are disparate among the heavy parish. For some it is the essence of the metal sound, and for others the incarnation of the Backstreet Boys metal version. They have something of both, but some merits must be recognized. Today, they are one of the most famous bands on the planet. Their album 'Hybrid Theory' has sold no more and no less than eight million copies in the USA alone, while they already have a good handful of platinum records in many countries.
Pese a todas las opiniones acerca del quinteto norteamericano son dispares entre la parroquia heavy. Para algunos es la esencia del sonido un metalero, y para otros la encarnación de los Backstreet Boys versión metálica. Algo de ambas cosas tienen, pero algunos méritos hay que reconocerles. Hoy por hoy, son una de las bandas más famosas del planeta. Su disco ´Hybrid Theory´ lleva despachadas nada más y nada menos que ocho millones de copias sólo en USA, al tiempo que ya cuentan con un buen puñado de discos de platino en multitud de países.
To achieve this, they have had the backing of a powerful record company, which has been involved in the publicity and manufacture of a product that was not excessively complicated to export. Their mixture of hip hop, hot guitars, and melodic and aggressive vocals over the metallic bulk of their sound is a not too risky proposal considering the times they live in. But hey, there they are, topping the American charts (70 weeks after the release of the album they were still at number 2) and with Mtv surrendered to the power of their very neat videoclips, small cinematic works of great budget (especially “In the End”).
Para conseguirlo han contado con el respaldo de una compañía discográfica poderosa, que se ha volcado en la publicidad y manufacturación de un producto que tampoco es que fuera excesivamente complicado de exportar. Su mezcla de hip hop, guitarras calientes, y dobladas voces, melódicas y agresivas, sobre el grueso metálico de su sonido es una propuesta no demasiado arriesgada viendo los tiempos que corren. Pero bueno, ahí les tenemos, coronando los charts americanos (tras 70 semanas de la salida del disco se mantenían en el n° 2) y con Mtv rendida al poder de sus cuidadísimos videoclips, pequeñas obras cinematográficas de gran presupuesto (especialmente “In the End”).
If we look back, we will see that some of the bands that achieved instant fame have not resisted well to the success, so we will see what happens with them. Authentic or pulled by the strings of the industry? Rock sensation or blatant commercial product? Opinions for all tastes, but only one final conclusion: Linkin Park, while waiting for the repercussion of their next album, are already a weight of contemporary rock.
Si volvemos a echar la vista atrás veremos que algunas de las formaciones que lograron la fama instantánea no han resistido bien los envites del éxito, así que ya veremos qué pasa con ellos. ¿Auténticos o manejados por los hilos de la industria? ¿Sensación rockera o descarado producto comercial? Opiniones para todos los gustos, pero una única conclusión final; Linkin Park, a las espera de la repercusión de su próximo plástico, son ya un peso del rock contemporáneo.
