Unbeatable on stage and with a spectacular stage design, the Boston band perfectly represents the “rock n' roll way of life”. To be considered America's biggest band in its genre is no mean feat, we are talking about the great musical power, which has Aerosmith as its great rock standards. 1973 saw the debut of a promising hard rock combo that a couple of albums later was already filling stadiums and being hailed as the successor band to the Stones. Similarities aside, Aerosmith have always had a personality of their own and an unprecedented quality, and that comparison was buried decades ago in the face of the evidence that Tyler and Perry were a match for Jagger and Richards themselves.

Ser considerados en su genero la banda mas grande de America no es moco de pavo, estamos hablando de la gran potencia musical, que tiene a Aerosmith como sus grandes estandartes rockeros. 1973 vio debutar a un prometedor combo de hard rock que un par de discos mas tarde ya se encontraba llenando estadios y siendo aclamado como el grupo sucesor de los Stones. Similitudes aparte, Aerosmith siempre han tenido personalidad propia y una calidad inaudita, y dicha comparación quedo enterrada hace décadas ante las evidencias de que Tyler y Perry eran una pareja compisitiva a la altura de los mismísimos Jagger y Richards.
The 70's was their first golden age. Their first five albums are simply wonderful, full of great songs and exciting moments. Those works already showed, surprisingly, a mature band that was going to give a lot, but it was with “Toys In The Attic” and anthems like “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way”, when the group's machinery exploded definitively, becoming their best-selling album of that period (6 million copies sold to this day in the USA). Then came what for many is their masterpiece, the great “Rocks”, but “Draw The Line” seemed to draw precisely the thin line along which the group walked with alcohol and drugs.
Los 70 fue su primera época dorada. Sus cinco primeros álbumes son sencillamente maravillosos, plagados de grandes canciones y momentos emocionantes. Esos trabajos ya mostraban, sorprendentemente, a una banda madura que iba a dar mucho de si, pero fue con “Toys In The Attic” e himnos como “Sweet Emotion” y “Walk This Way”, cuando la maquinaria del grupo explota definitivamente, convirtiéndose en su álbum mas vendido de aquel periodo (6 millones de copias vendidas hasta el dia de hoy en USA). Luego llegaría el que para muchos es su obra cumbre, el grandioso “Rocks”, pero “Draw The Line” pareció dibujar precisamente la delgada línea por la que caminaba el grupo junto al alcohol y las drogas.
“Live Bootleg” was the testimony of that wild tour that nevertheless left the band in tatters. The departure of Perry, confronted in a clash of characters distorted by drugs with Tyler, was coming, and Brad Whitford would be the next to flee from that madhouse. Curiously their most successful album to date would be released in those years, specifically in 1987. We are talking about his “Greatest Hits” which has already distributed 10 million copies in his native country. Without going any further, it recently climbed back up to number 3 in the top-sellers chart with more than two years of age. “Rock In A Hard Place” (1982), however, seemed to be their definitive testament, with Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay on guitars.

Bad times for a band (yet another one) undone by drugs and alcohol, with all its members, some more than others, lost between the bottle and the magic powders. It seemed like the end of the band. But no. They signed with Geffen Records, springboard for many hard rock bands of the time, and although “Done With Mirrors” in '85 was not a spectacular comeback, their collaboration with the rappers RUN DMC in the revision of “Walk This Way” would present them rejuvenated before a new generation that was beginning to grow with the heavy metal and the rock macarra made in the States.

Pero no. Reconocen su adicción a tiempo, se desenganchan y comienzan una nueva vida juntos con Perry y Whitford otra vez a bordo de la nave, Firman con Geffen Records, trampolín para muchos grupos hard rockeros de la época, y aunque “Done With Mirrors” en el 85 no fue un espectacular regreso, su colaboración con los raperos RUN DMC en la revisión de “Walk This Way” les presentaría rejuvenecidos ante una nueva generación que empezaba a crecer con el heavy metal y el rock macarra facturado en los States.
Aerosmith's own pupils were dominating the market and the masters were not going to give in to their direct apprentices. “Permanent Vacation” was the first album of a sensational trilogy, completed with the best-sellers ‘Pump’ and ‘Get A Grip’. Aerosmith rose from the ashes like a Phoenix Bird to conquer the world again with more strength than ever through hit singles like “Love In An Elevator”, “Janie's Got A Gun”, “Cryin”, “Livin' On The Edge” or “Amazing” (in which they talk about their addictions and the light at the end of the tunnel). Europe also surrenders at their feet, and the band simply empties on stage every night with apotheosic shows. More than 19 million records sold just since their comeback in the mid 80's, the publication of the well known compilation of their last years “Big Ones” and the conquest of MTV with each one of their spectacular videoclips, and their participation leaving the audience speechless at Woodstock '94 are the most relevant data.

Europa también se rinde a sus pies, y la banda sencillamente se vacia en escena cada noche con shows apoteósicos. Mas de 19 millones de discos vendidos tan solo desde su vuelta a mediados de los 80, la publicación del consabido recopilatorio de sus últimos años “Big Ones” y la conquista de la MTV con cada uno de sus espectaculares videoclips, y su participación dejando boquiabierto al publico en Woodstock ’94 son los datos mas relevantes.
Back at Columbia, the label that sheltered them in their early years, they released “Nine Lives”, which also topped the charts. Their carefully crafted ballads ensured them the attention of a wide audience. Another bombshell arrives, their version of Diane Warren for the B.S.O. of “Armageddon”, “I Don't Wan't To Miss A Thing”, becomes their most successful single to date, giving them the opportunity for the first time in their long career to reach No. 1 in the singles charts. “Just Push Play”, their latest album, has disappointed more than one and has meant a setback in sales (one million copies in the USA), but Aerosmith are still great even if they are determined lately to turn their backs on their old fans, cultivate more accessible sounds and rub shoulders with little stars.
Their latest compilation “Young Last” is enjoying a good promotional campaign and recording strong sales in countries such as England, where it has already reached gold record status. To the statistics it is necessary to refer, 3 times voted as best rock band in the prestigious magazine People, a good handful of prizes in the Mtv, 4 grammys in their showcases, 54 million records sold, recent inclusion in the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame?
De vuelta a Columbia, la casa que les amparo en sus primeros años, publican “Nine Lives”, que también coparía los charts. Sus cuidadísimas baladas les aseguran la atención de un publico amplio. Llega otro bombazo, su versión de Diane Warren para la B.S.O. de “Armageddon”, “I Don’t Wan’t To Miss A Thing”, se convierte en su single de mayor éxito hasta la fecha, brindándoles la oportunidad por primera vez en su longeva carrera de colocarse como n°1 en las listas de sencillos. “Just Push Play”, su ultimo trabajo, ha decepcionado a mas de uno y ha supuesto un retroceso en ventas (un millón de copias USA), pero Aerosmith siguen siendo grandes aun cuando se empeñen últimamente en dar la espalda a sus antiguos fans, cultivar sonidos mas accesibles y codearse con estrellitas de tres al cuarto.
Su ultimo recopilatorio “Young Last” esta contando con una buena campaña promocional y registrando ventas potentes en países como Inglaterra, donde ya llego a disco de oro. A las estadísticas hay que remitirse, 3 veces votados como mejor banda de rock en la prestigiosa revista People, un buen puñado de premios en los Mtv, 4 grammys en sus vitrinas, 54 millones de discos vendidos, reciente inclusión en el Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame…
