While it is true that those who laid the first stone in the evolution of rock towards heavy metal were bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, the first group of the style, the true fathers of heavy metal, are Black Sabbath. Together with Judas Priest, another formation from Birmingham somewhat later, they gave the birth certificate to a musical style that owes everything to them. From their debut, with Tony Iommi's heavy guitars, Geezer Butler's rumbling bass, Bill Ward's apocalyptic drums, Ozzy's screeching voice and their continuous fiddling with the dark side and Satanism, they marked the path to follow for those who would come later.
Si bien es cierto que los que pusieron la primera piedra en la evolución del rock hacia el heavy metal fueron bandas como Led Zeppelin y Deep Purple, el primer grupo del estilo, los verdaderos padres del heavy, son Black Sabbath. Junto a Judas Priest, otra formación de Birmingham algo posterior, dieron el certificado de nacimiento a un estilo musical que se lo debe todo. Desde su debut, con las pesadas guitarras de Tony Iommi, el bajo retumbante de Geezer Butler, la batería apocalíptica de Bill Ward, la chillona voz de Ozzy y sus continuos jugueteos con el lado oscuro y el satanismo, marcaron el camino a seguir a los que vendrían después.
Although they were not one of the most successful bands of their time, and they saw how their named rivals got more glory than them, their first six albums are the key reference to understand what this is all about. Those six marvelous albums make up an excellent first stage, full of creativity, and of capital importance in the later evolution of the hard sounds. “Black Sabbath”, ‘Paranoid’, ‘Masters Of Reality’, ‘Vol 4’, ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ and ‘Sabotage’ cannot be missing in the discographies of the fans of overwhelming guitar downloads, cutting riffs and extreme sonorities.
Aunque no fueron una de las bandas mas exitosas de su tiempo, y vieron como sus nombrados rivales se llevaban mas gloria que ellos, sus seis primeros álbumes conforman la referencia clave para entender de que va todo esto. Esos seis maravillosos redondos conforman una primera etapa excelente, de rebosante creatividad, e importancia capital en el posterior devenir de los sonidos duros. “Black Sabbath”, “Paranoid”, “Masters Of Reality”, “Vol 4”, “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” y “Sabotage” no pueden faltar en las discográfias de los fans de abrumadoras descargas guitarreras, riffs cortantes y sonoridades extremas.
Specifically it was the song “Paranoid” from 1970 that would give them absolute fame on both sides of the Atlantic. After the glorious sextet of initial Lp's, things began to go awry. They were a very popular band, and they walked the face of the earth as absolute rock n' roll stars, but in “Technical Ecstasy”, due to the image of satanic and black magic cultivators that haunted them, they tried to walk their sound, approaching slightly to progressive rock. Those were not Black Sabbath, and sales plummeted.
The group had also succumbed to the hell of drugs, and relations were deteriorating until the expulsion of Ozzy was confirmed, the charismatic frotman who would continue to wage war outside the group with more popularity than the Sabbath themselves. From then on a to and fro of musicians would begin, although Tony Iommi, always present in all the incarnations, was in charge of keeping up a band that was no longer that of its beginnings, it lost its initial identity progressively, and perhaps it should not have continued to be called with that name that tastes like glory to the metal fans.
Concretamente fue el tema “Paranoid” de 1970 el que les daría la fama adsoluta a ambos lados del Atlantico. Tras el glorioso sexteto de Lp’s inicial las cosas empezaron a torcerse. Eran una banda muy popular, y se paseaban por la faz de la tierra como estrellas adsolutas del rock n’ roll, pero en “Technical Ecstasy”, debido a la imagen de satanicos y cultivadores de magia negra que les perseguía, trataron de caminar su sonido, acercándose ligeramente al rock progresivo. Aquellos no eran Black Sabbath, y las ventas cayeron en picado.
El grupo además había sucumbido al infierno de las drogas, y las relaciones se fueron deteriorando hasta que se confirmo la expulsión de Ozzy, el carismático frotman que seguiría dando guerra fuera del seno del grupo con mas popularidad que los propios Sabbath. A partir de entonces empezaría un ir y venir de músicos, aunque Tony Iommi, siempre presente en todas las encarnaciones, se encargo de mantener en pie a una banda que ya no era la de sus comienzos, perdió su identidad inicial progresivamente, y quizá no debería haber seguido llamándose con ese nombre que sabe a gloria a los aficionados metalicos.
Still, after Ozzy's departure, a small but prodigious singer infused new life into a band that partially took flight again, it was Ronnie James Dio, and with him they recorded one of the best albums of their history, “Heaven & Hell”, more inclined towards the standard heavy sound of the 80's, a sound that they kept in another important work, “Mob Rules”. In 1985 they had a first and quick reunion with Ozzy for the Live Aid Festival and then went through an ephemeral stage with Ian Gillan at the front, something that is remembered as one of the least profitable eras of the band.
Aun, con todo, tras la marcha de Ozzy, un pequeño pero prodigioso cantante infundio savia nueva a un grupo que levanto parcialmente el vuelo otra vez, era Ronnie James Dio, y con el grabarian uno de los mejores discos de su historia, “Heaven & Hell”, mas inclinado hacia el heavy estándar de los 80, un sonido que mantuvieron en otra obra importante, “Mob Rules”. En el 85 se constato una primera y rápida reunión con Ozzy para el Live Aid Festival para pasar después por una efímera etapa con Ian Gillan al frente, algo que se recuerda como una de las eras menos aprovechables de la banda.
Geezer Butler came and went in and out of the band “like Peter in his own house”. Tony Martin became the most stable singer during those years in which many renowned musicians passed through the group, such as Vinnie Appice, Bob Daisley, Eric Singer, Cozy Powell or Neil Murray. In 1992 Dio returns fleetingly to the band to record “Dehumanizer”, but the chaotic dynamics of the group continues. They are years that are remembered with confusion, to which the public did not pay too much attention although they never completely forgot about the band. But when one speaks of Black Sabbath always comes to mind the original line-up, the mythical combo led by Ozzy, and practically erases from his memory a long decade in which there is not much to highlight, and more if compared to their classic years.
Geezer Butler entraba y salía del grupo “como Pedro por su casa”. Tony Martin se convirtió en el cantante mas estable durante esos años en los que pasaron por el grupo infinidad de músicos de renombre, como Vinnie Appice, Bob Daisley, Eric Singer, Cozy Powell o Neil Murray. En 1992 Dio vuelve fugazmente a la banda para grabar “Dehumanizer”, pero la caotica dinámica del grupo continua. Son unos años que se recuerdan con confusión, a los que el publico no presto demasiada atención aunque nunca llego a olvidarse por completo de la banda. Pero cuando uno habla de Black Sabbath siempre se le viene a la cabeza la formación original, el mitico combo liderado por Ozzy, y prácticamente borra de su memoria una década larga en la que no hay demasiado que resaltar, y mas si se compara con sus años clásicos.
Even in America, where they spent long periods of time touring in the 70s, Ozzy's name is more recognizable for the group than that of Sabbath themselves, as his successful solo career overshadowed the band's declining years. Luckily the new generations have been able to enjoy the greatness of the legendary first line-up. Ozzy, Iommi, Butler and Ward reunited in 1997 for a series of concerts that have been repeated until today (they even visited Spain), whenever Ozzy's solo career has allowed it. As a testimony there was a live album with two new songs, appropriately titled “Reunion”, and for now little is known about the recording of a future studio album which has been much talked about in the last few years. We have already said that Sabbath are not chart fodder, nor are they arduous chart breakers (although they have 12 gold, 8 platinum and 3 multi-platinum albums to their credit, mainly collected with their classic albums) but they have a guaranteed loyal legion of fans who will always be there to support them, and a metal parish ready to pay homage to them forever, as the true metal wizards they are.
Incluso en America, donde pasaron grandes temporadas girando en los 70, el nombre de Ozzy es mas reconocible para el grupo que el de los propios Sabbath, pues su exitosa carrera en solitario oscureció los decadentes años de la banda. Por suerte las nuevas generaciones han podido disfrutar de la grandeza de la legendaria primera formación. Ozzy, Iommi, Butler y Ward se reunieron en el 97 para unas series de conciertos que se han ido repitiendo hasta nuestros días (incluso pasaron por España), siempre que la carrera solista de Ozzy lo ha permitido. Como testimonio quedo un disco en directo con dos temas de ultima factura, apropiadamente titulado como “Reunion”, y por ahora poco se sabe de la grabación de un futuro disco de estudio del que mucho se ha hablado en los últimos años. Ya hemos dicho que Sabbath no son carne de listas de éxitos, ni unos arduos rompedores de charts (pese a que en su haber tengan 12 discos de oro, 8 de platino y 3 multi-platinos, principalmente recaudados con sus álbumes clásicos) pero tienen garantizada una fiel legion de fans que siempre estará ahí apoyándoles, y una parroquia metalica dispuesta a rendirles pleitesía eternamente, como autenticos magos del metal que son.
