“Blood, Sugar, Sex and Magic” is the composition of the curious substance that runs through the veins of these ‘hot peppers’. How else to explain their inexhaustible rhythm, the undulation that their music produces in the bodies, the elasticity of their songs...? That curious phrase was also the title of an album that would lead them to absolute glory, becoming the standard bearers of the new rock trends of the 90s. But before that, the Red Hot had already come a long way. At the end of the 80's in Los Angeles the explosion of the hard rock but macarra and recardado, with the chupas of leather, the boots of cowboy and the carded hair together with a waste of attitude and cockiness took place in Los Angeles.
“Sangre, Azucar, Sexo y Magia” es la composición de la curiosa sustancia que corre por las venas de estas “guindillas picantes”. ¿Cómo explicar si no su inagotable ritmo, la ondulación que produce en los cuerpos su música, la elasticidad de sus canciones…? Esa curiosa frase fue además también el titulo de un disco que les habría de llevar a la gloria adsoluta, convirtiéndose en abanderados de las nuevas tendencias rockeras de los 90. Pero antes, los Red Hot ya llevaban bastante camino recorrido. A finales de los 80 se produjo en Los Angeles la explosión del hard rock mas macarra y recardado, con las chupas de cuero, las botas de cowboy y los pelos cardados unidos a un derroche de actitud y chulería.
Curiously, in that same American city that has so much history in rock n' roll, a previously named scene was being generated. At the front, Jane's Addiction, one of the fathers of the “alternative” sound. Their first works passed quite unnoticed in the international scene, but they already contained the seed from which would germinate one of the most important combos of the past decade.
Curiosamente en esa misma ciudad americana que tanta historia tiene en el rock n’ roll, se estaba generando una escena anteriormente nombrada. Al frente, Jane’s Addiction, uno de los padres del sonido “alternativo”. Y mas tarde, los Red Hot Chili Peppers harian su aparición y comenzarían a hacer temblar los canones y cliches del rock de la época. Sus primeros trabajos pasaron bastante desapersibidos en la escena internacional, pero ya contenían la semilla de la que iba a germinar uno de los combos mas importantes de la pasada década.
Through their shaker, always in continuous agitation, they passed the rock with a high funky component, full of energy and beach fun. In fact, “Freakly Styley”, the second album after their eponymous debut, was produced by George Clinton, a legend of black funk and rhythmic fusion. “The Uplift Mofo Party Plan”, as its name suggests (if anyone can decipher it) was a spectacular sound party that already got the attention of the public and contained one of their first anthems, one of the few songs of those years that are still played in their concerts. We are talking about the crushing “Me & My Friends”, undoubtedly a high point of his career.

De hecho “Freakly Styley”, segundo plástico tras su homónimo debut, fue producido por George Clinton, una leyenda del funk negro y la fusión rítmica. “The Uplift Mofo Party Plan”, como su nombre indica (si es que alguien sabe descifrarlo) era una espectacular fiesta sonora que ya logro llamar la atención del publico y contenía uno de sus primerizos himnos, de las pocas canciones de esos años que siguen sonando en sus conciertos. Estamos hablando del machacante “Me & My Friends”, sin duda un punto álgido de su carrera.
With their next album they become popular in all spheres, but not especially for their music. The cover of the Ep “Abbey Road”, in imitation of the original Beatles cover (the band crossing a pedestrian crossing), attracts attention in record stores. The band appears naked with socks covering their embarrassment. More than one would wonder who these crazy people were, but soon they were going to be known in every corner of the planet. “Mother's Milk” meant the incorporation of a guitarist who was to make history with the band. John Frusciante joined Flea and the muscular jumper Anthony Kiedis to give birth to an album that was already a clear warning of what was to come.

La portada del Ep “Abbey Road”, a imitación de la original de los Beatles (la banda cruzando un paso de peatones), acapara las miradas en las tiendas de discos. La banda aparece desnuda con calcetines tapando sus vergüenzas. Mas de uno se preguntaría quienes eran esos chalados, pero pronto lo iban a saber en todos los rincones del planeta. “Mother’s Milk” supone la incorporación de un guitarrista que iba a hacer historia con la banda. John Frusciante se unia al chiflado de Flea y al musculoso saltimbanqui Anthony Kiedis para parir un disco que ya era un claro aviso de lo que se avecinaba.

Cualquiera que en 1991 pusiera en marcha la radio para escuchar los hits del momento se encontro sin duda alguna con ese estribillo mareante en clave de rap, que consagraria a la banda como el estandarte de los nuevos sonidos del rock Americano. “Blood Sugar, Sex Magik”, el disco doble que contenía el susodicho tema, era un compendio magistral del sonido de los Chili Peppers elevado a un plano mas elevado y tocado por la producción maestra de Rick Rubin.
Consequently, it swept the charts halfway around the world in direct competition with other major works of its time such as “Metallica” and “Use Your Illusion”. The band was on top and no one was going to bring them down from there. The overflowing adrenaline turned into melancholy in another great hit, “Under The Bridge”, a ballad that crossed the states of America and later the Atlantic to increase the millionaire sales of a classic Lp, turning point of the rock avant-garde of the last times. Their music videos had a privileged place in the grid of an MTV that had already become a springboard for new stars, a pity that now it has lost its taste for rock. “What Hits?” showed new fans his past legacy, and America's most popular cartoon series, the Simpsons, would include him in one of its episodes, a symptom of his growing popularity in the States.
Consiguientemente arraso las listas de medio mundo en competencia directa con otras obras capitales de su tiempo como “Metallica” y “Use Your Illusion”. La banda estaba en la cima y nadie iba a bajarles de ahí. La adrenalina desbordante se torno en melancolía en otro gran éxito, “Under The Bridge”, una balada que cruzo los estados de America y mas tarde el Atlantico para aumentar las millonarias ventas de un Lp clásico, punto de inflexión de la vanguardia rockera de los últimos tiempos. Sus videoclips tenían un lugar privilegiado en la parrilla de una Mtv que ya se había convertido un trampolín para nuevas estrellas, lastima que ahora haya perdido su gusto por el rock. “What Hits?” mostro a los nuevos fans su legado pasado, y la serie de dibujos mas popular de America, los Simpsons, es incluiría en uno de sus episodios, un síntoma de su creciente popularidad en los States.
Soon after came the low times, but the bad moments of bands as absolutely monstrous as this one, many “second-tier” bands would like them for themselves. Because the Red Hot never stopped being great. They continued to sell records without any difficulty, but the internal fracture was marked. The drugs had taken their toll on the band, especially on the weak and lost mind of Frusciante, who became totally disconnected from the real world and became engrossed in his personal paranoias. His departure from the band was a foregone conclusion, and the arrival of Dave Navarro, guitarist of fellow countrymen Jane's Addiction, did not bear the expected fruits, as the six-stringer did not fit in well with the group.
Poco después llegaron horas bajas, pero los malos momentos de grupos tan adsolutamente monstruosos como este ya los quisieran para si muchas formaciones “de segunda fila”. Porque los Red Hot nunca dejaron de ser grandes. Seguían vendiendo discos sin dificultad alguna, pero la fractura interna era acusada. Las drogas habían hecho mella en la banda, especialmente en la débil y perdida mente de Frusciante, que paso a desconectar totalmente con el mundo real y enfrascarse en sus paranoias personales. Su salida del grupo estaba cantada, y la llegada de Dave Navarro, guitarrista de los compatriotas Jane’s Addiction no dio los frutos esperados, pues el seis cuerdas no encajo bien en el seno del grupo.
“One Hot Minute” was an album with a good commercial run but very far from the mastery of its predecessor, even though the single ‘Aeroplane’ was very popular at the time. It was necessary a break, to stop the machinery, to reconsider... a breath of fresh air that brought Frusciante back home to record a new best-seller, “Californication”, that would raise them again to the top, expanding considerably their public, playing in all the radio stations of the globe. Monumental tour although without the freshness of yesteryear, and role as headliners in two historical events, the accidental Woodstock' 99 and the third and multitudinous edition of Rock In Rio. “By The Way” is about to be released, will it be another album that will cross the style barriers and make the charts shake once again? All bets are open, but the scales are tipped in favor of the success of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a crazy band with an inexhaustible capacity to amaze the audience.
“One Hot Minute” fue un disco de buena tirada comercial pero muy alejado de la maestria de su antecesor pese a que el single “Aeroplane” fuera muy radiado en su dia. Era necesario un descanso, parar la maquinaria, recapacitar… un soplo de aire fresco que trajo a Frusciante de vuelta a casa para grabar un nuevo superventas, “Californication”, que les auparía de nuevo a lo mas alto, ampliando considerablemente su publico, sonando en todas las emisoras de radio del globo. Monumental gira aunque sin la frescura de antaño, y papel como cabezas de cartel en dos eventos históricos, el accidentado Woodstock’ 99 y la tercera y multitudinaria edición del Rock In Rio. “By The Way” esta al caer. ¿Sera otra obra que traspase las barreras de estilos y haga temblar los charts una vez mas? Se abren las apuestas, pero desde luego la balanza se decanta a priori a favor del éxito de los Red Hot Chili Peppers, alocado conjunto de inagotable capacidad para maravillar a la audiencia.
