A marvel that condenses the purest essence of hard rock in all its expression. While Michael Schenker was in their ranks, UFO was one of the best heavy bands on the face of the earth, and later Phil Mogg and the drunken Pete Way have managed to maintain the ship with more or less dignity.
The power of their songs was immeasurable, as their name reflects, almost extraterrestrial. “Doctor Doctor” is the key song in their repertoire -along with the no less basic ‘Rock Bottom’-, a composition by Schenker and Mogg that perfectly sums up what UFO was. For the blond German guitarist there are no words; this man was once a true God.
He had the ideal technique to produce effective riffs at the perfect point between simplicity and virtuosity, and was perhaps one of the most influential axes (if not the most) of his era, because he was ahead of his time or rather, those who came after him did nothing but imitate him.
“Doctor Doctor” began with an exhibition of his inseparable Flying V, an emotive guitar intro almost as a solo accompanied by the keyboards of Paul Raymond who then backed him up on the riff while he continued to do his thing shooting feeling and transmitting energy.
Sensational, thus began the fireworks show of good and hard rock, with the guitars dancing to the sound to which Mogg put his personal charisma. But if you want to enjoy the song in all its dimension, it is mandatory to turn to that magnificent live double called “Strangers In The Night”, Schenker's testament on board the rock spaceship, an exciting live classic at full volume that figures among the best captured on vinyl from a stage due to its extreme beauty. It is thrilling just to remember it...
