Disc:Pronoubced "Leh - Nerd".
Year:1974.
One of the most intense and emotional pieces of Rock, without a doubt. “Free Bird” is one of those songs that transport the listener to a paradise of hypnotic sensibility, that produce an immediate evasion and elevate the soul of mortals with its tremendous emotional charge and its more than heartfelt execution like that of a ‘free bird’ flying in the open sky.
Lynyrd Skynyrd” was conceived as a tribute to the late guitarist of their colleagues and pioneers of Southern Rock The Allman Brothers Band, Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. As fate would have it, the song ended up being a tribute not only to Duane, but also to two of its creators, Ronnie Van Zandt (vocals) and Steven Gaines (guitar), as well as Cassie Gaines, Steven's sister and backing vocalist, and Dean Kilpatrick, manager, all of whom died in the tragically famous 1977 plane crash that cut short the career of the band's classic line-up.
That's why every time “Free Bird” plays, it's easy to feel a chill down your spine and a nostalgic pang of sorrow. The best thing without a doubt is to enjoy the song as one of rock's luminary pieces.
That balladic beginning, with the guitars tamed, the slide sung like a nightingale and a Ronnie overflowing with feeling will end up turning into a guitar apotheosis after a stratospheric crescendo, with one of the most famous solos in history (the three studio tracks were played by Allen Collins although live the instrumentalists took turns) making its way through the dazzling combination of the guitar triad.
The song is extended to more than nine minutes of pure jam, converted into an infinite improvisation even more extensive live, where the song took on a new entity and an almost epic character. The version included in the masterful “One More From The Road” is the maximum expression of the electric catharsis of this indescribable composition.
