Canada's economy is a highly developed one and the world's ninth-largest as of 2024, with a GDP of approximately US$2.117 trillion.
But after the recent tariff showdown with the United States some days ago one might begin to wonder what is next for Canada, can they trust the united states to completely rely on them, can they build their economy to be stronger than it is. So the big question is
Can Canada decouple from the United States Economy?
First and foremost 80% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the United States border which means despite it's vast land major parts of it are vacant and with a population of over 40 million most of their land has not been fully utilized and populated which directly shows that there's still enough room and if those land are habitable then Canada can increase their population as a larger population means larger economy.
But the closeness to the United States means that despite having highly skilled and educated people they risk losing them to the United States.
Canada also relies heavily on resources which might contribute to why they are less interested in rapidly developing other sectors of their economy. Their export is based on its rich natural resources especially Crude oil and others such as natural gas, coal and iron ore. They have the fourth-largest proven oil reserves
Canada's inability to convert most of their raw materials into finished goods shows they're not yet at their full potential which shows room for improvement and more investment and innovations are needed if they really want to become a very big economy.
They rely a lot on sending their goods to the big economy therefore they rely a lot on the united states because the United States is Canada's number one trading partner which accounts for over 70% of Canada export. Which means they risk a serious trade deficit should they cut off from the united states.
Canada is hotspot for immigration which in the long run can populate the country but the country has huge potential, land and resources needed to become a major player in Global economy then bedding with the United States.
