Until the End of the World

October 2021

Yesterday, or the day before I can’t be sure or be assed to be sure, I took the plastic dental floss container; out of its plastic wrapping; out of the plastic bag it arrived in; and stopped for a bit and frowned slightly.

Actually, I stop and frown a lot for quite long periods of time pretty regularly.

In the words of Carl Jung, posted frequently online so who can really say if they are his or not they are, but they're fuckin' good words so I quote them regularly as well:

Talking is often a torment for me, and I need many days of silence to recover from the futility of words — Carl Jung

I think I first loved this quote because I was raised in a family of neurotically talkative humans who found me odd because I enjoy long periods of silence.

The fact that there are other humans out there, who also thrive on a great deal of silence and solitude, made me feel less of an alien in my own family.

Recently, however, I’ve come to understand more about what Jung may have been referring to, on a more Universal scale, after he'd studied the minds of us mortals for an almost lifetime.

Because human nature.

And it’s not logical, Spock.

hr.png

When I unwrapped the many plastic layered bundle I commented, to my son, that we humans have known about the environmental consequences of plastic for some years.

I wondered, out loud, why we haven’t manufactured anything less toxic for our planet to wrap our many must-have-not-really-necessities in — yet.

A conversation ensued about a post once read on some kind of mushroom being able to dispose of the stuff and my son (with his wonderfully creative mind) commented that these shrooms should be built into plastic items and should self detonate after a specific period of time. Huh. Nice idea.

I responded, after some thought, that maybe some other kind of compound might be added to make them detonate on demand, because different items are kept for different periods of time.

And so we solved the planet’s environmental problem of refuse, in one brief conversation, and we carried on with our day.

hr.png

Thing is, this feeling of futility with speaking comes and goes for me nowadays.

It didn’t just begin yesterday with the stupid plastic, within plastic, within plastic delivered from our local store.

I was chronically naïve, once upon a time. Now I’m mildly bitter, somewhat jaded and often pessimistic and I can’t seem to shake it off. PTSD/C-PTSD, anyone?

Silence because it doesn't really seem to matter too much what we know. We humans prefer to avoid accountability, stay comfortably in denial and secretly hope that someone else is going to fix all this sh!t for us.

And, some days now, I'm just too tired to give a f*ck anymore as well.

hr.png

I forgot to mention how the convo ended.

me: well, the manufacturer should pay for the tech to add them to their products. But that would cost them more money and they’re all about the profit.

me: (silently to myself) Follow the money — again. Nothing is ever gonna change. Meh.

So I give up. Shut up. And, like a good human, I hope that someone else will try and get the hard conversations going and keep them going so I can pretend I don’t give a toss either.

And, for a while, I even convince myself that I don’t.

Thing is… I do. and I know most of you secretly, and not so secretly, do too

Also...

"Unless someone like you me cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - misquoted from The Lorax, Dr. Seuss, so I don't get cancelled for being a smart ass. Because I'm not trying to this time. I'm afraid for my children's future. Genuinely!

While I was pondering the folly of human nature, back in 2021, I found this:

Snapshot taken from the full article here >

We Don’t Really Know Ourselves

"People, for example, are loss averse: they’d rather expect a lesser reward with the same risk but limit their losses. This has financial market consequences. But this idea (that humans don’t always make perfectly rational decisions) goes far beyond the field of economics." - Jess the Avocado

"A memory bias is a cognitive bias in psychology that either increases or hinders the recall of a memory (either the likelihood that the memory will be recalled at all, or the length of time it takes to be recalled, or both), or that affects the content of a reported memory." - Jess the Avocado

hr.png

There is more interesting information on how weird we humans can be in the full article.

And maybe, just maybe, this is why we’re still delivering plastic containers, in plastic wrapping, in plastic bags after so many years.

And why so much other sh!t is still going on that, in all rights and with the availability of so much information at our fingertips, should not be happening at all anymore.

Maybe, just maybe, I can stop being so jaded and bitter, thinking it’s all about greed and selfishness maybe.

Maybe just maybe I should accept that we’re unusual creatures who don’t really make much sense.

Maybe I can even stop trying to understand us.

Or myself.

This last one would not be beneficial to anyone around me... I've had to make enough amends for this to no longer be a hypothesis. Officially proven fact. 👍

Human freedom is not an illusion; it is an objective phenomenon, distinct from all other biological conditions and found in only one species - us. - Daniel Dennett

I used to leave a notebook beside my bed... Write down the crazy dreams I used to have...

I wait... with hopeful eyeballs...

I've never tried a dream diary. I hear they are pretty good!

I'll trade your Google Docs for Obisian and raise your sheet of paper to "Gee, that was so good I thought I'd remember it!"

Me too! It was an hour or so conversation figuring out some of the logistic with him. Very, very interesting!

I'll let him know you're waiting :)

None but ourselves, my friend ❤️

I'll save this to use on more to follow... 👏

Our complexity is what makes us special. We'd be a race of boring creatures, like other animals, if we truly understood ourselves.

A smart kid your boy is. That self-detonating idea is brilliant! But we humans will continue being humans, forever mysterious to ourselves, and will still keep delivering plastic containers, in plastic wrapping, in plastic bags, after so many years and even for many years to come.

If only we all cared a lot more about changing the world for the better, rather than just the profits, we'd probably be closer to understanding ourselves better, but we don't care much about that either.

Hello you :D

How did the studies go?? Are you done? Chess, anyone??

I think most humans do care. Don't get all jaded and bitter please! You're too cool as you are.

I think most humans are so desperately trying to survive Capitalism that they aren't able to think about much else really.

And the corporations don't care because that's the point! Keep us weak and paddling madly. :/

I agree with him. Although I love talking, it takes it all out of me and then it takes a long time of avoiding humans to recover 😂

The mushroom packaging is already designed, but of course more expensive than plastic. If we don’t know what it is about, it is always about money, as my economy teacher always said. They don’t even need to detonate, cause they can be composted ever so fast and easy with no harm to the environment.

In this week’s meeting at work we talked about printing documents and while I insisted on printing less, my colleague who apparently cares for environment was saying why don’t we print it every time. Ehh… On the bright side, my boss came to my office to today and started with ‘You’ll be pleased to know I spoke to a guy about the recycling paper’. I was pleased indeed 😁

‘I don’t give a shit’ is my favourite saying, while in truth I care way too much.

Hope you’re well Nicky. You’ve been in my thoughts 💙

Oh? How awesome! I'll let my son know :D

They should just make it mandatory. The end. Use ot or don't package stuff in anything but paper. Or nothing. I mean... putting fruit into a plastic container... insanity.😐

I've had a paperless office for... 12 years? It's really easy with online readers and signers. If I had to print I would just go to a print shop. Happened, like, once a year and was always for official stuff only.

Government still does everything on paper. I reckon it's so they can lose stuff in random "fires" when they need to. I mean... really... who are they kidding?

I don't give a f*ck is my favourite saying 😆

Sometimes people who care to much need to learn to care a bit less, angel. Or it's drive you quite mad. Just don't stop caring in full. For someone with a good heart, losing heart is kind of like dying. Stay you please ❤️ (Just give less f*cks)

Paperless office might be possible for some industries, but not all. Aerospace standards still require printing and storing tons of paper sadly. We also have many employees who are not computer literate and printing paperwork so they can fill in their daily numbers is still very much a thing here.

Finding that sweet spot in everything is sure the key, but it takes time to get there. I care less about some things I used to care more, then I start caring more about things I never cared and so on. A constant evolution 🤪

Nicely said!

And yes. Change does take time.

And waiting is a skill.

Like your approach 👍🏼😊

Money and greed move everything. And I understand that feeling of me giving a shit even though we care. And is that the world goes on and we humans comfortably think that there is someone else who will take care of solving the problems.
But anyway, lots of love and take care ♡

Money and greed move everything

Yes it does. A lot of the time. Wow!

And Love. I hope! When we aren't afraid ❤️

Lots of love to you today. 😊

Maybe just maybe I should accept that we’re unusual creatures who don’t really make much sense.

Perhaps we're just passing creatures carrying our armor around, thinking we're doing the best we can despite being completely flawed.

When I read your texts, they regularly occupy my thoughts, and I always need more time to process everything before attempting to respond in a meaningful way.
Most of the time, I simply nod in agreement with you in my head; occasionally, that seems to make the most sense to me.

There is nothing more to say; she said it all.💫

That is the absolute best compliment ever. Thank you!

It means I got a conversation started. The point of all of this.

But... I totally bet you do have more thoughts and experience... #justsaying

I'd also totally love to hear what goes on in your brain :)

Although... I'm also moving in to more art and beauty and less activism these days. I've done my time. Time to rest and enjoy things bit more for the next while.

Glad that's with you in the picture. Have a beautiful weekend ❤️

I'd also totally love to hear what goes on in your brain :)

Sometimes while reading I'm trying to walk down your path, can find myself (past self) between some of your lines, especially when it comes to diversity and acceptance.

Aren't we wrapped in toxic plastic layers?

And I completely agree with the statement that we don't know ourselves well enough, nor will we ever get to know.
Doubt we can experience enough to claim the opposite of the above in one life cycle. I also enjoyed reading Jung for a long time, and I can say that it was through his Red book that I got to know myself a little better, at least to explain myself, that everything is fine with me.

Time to rest and enjoy things bit more for the next while.

Everyone knows the recipe for happiness: do what makes you happy.
Wish you the best one.💫

You are such a special one. YOU 💥

Thank you for sharing such remarkable and intelligent thoughts.

Now you've given me some pause to think about things some more 🙏

Jung had an extended nervous break down over a five year period, you know. He went off and isolated himself for some years coming up with all of this genius. And it is genius when I've had brief moments of seeing how his theory works in action. (*ping!)

No idea how he came up with this stuff, locked away alone in a room somewhere.

I guess he figured out that there's nothing much wrong with any of us. Other than us not being fine with ourselves.

You are more than fine to me. ❤️😌

More silence, less plastic. I think we have the same priorities!

We should form a club for like minded misanthropes where we can sit in silence together.

They did!

It's called "meditation class". :D

If you wanna get an online group sitting together I'd totally drop in to that. 👍

It's a skill in times like these. To sit in silence. Yes. Very under-rated!

And even more difficult to do when someone else is present (some times).

Say when... I'll come and sit with you.

If there was ever a person whose perspective and overall contribution will continue to deepen in value for generations to come, it would have to be Carl Jung. One of my personal favourites from him is this:

There is no reality beyond the individual

I consider it the most important social axiom

That quote from him about talking and the futility of words speaks to me so very deeply. Never knew he said that. Amazing. It's a kind of relief. I'd love to be able to send that to my friends and family, everyone I care about and be like: here, this. Articulates the truth of the matter phenomenally well.

I know that feeling too of not wanting to repeat internet misattribution / misinformation and it was bothering me as well. Thankfully I was able to find out he did in fact say that:

Letters of C.G. Jung - Volume 2, 1951-1961

😊

Sheer greed and short sightedness. I hate all the huge corps and even down to the little companies that put profit before the planet. Plastic is shit and as you say, we have known for ages and yet you still get things double/triple/tenteen times wrapped in the stuff!!

I think I came from a similar background. Talk talk talk, and TV in the background just in case there wasn't enough noise. My mum's advised me of snobbishness in my early teens because I like a bit of quiet in my room!!

👀

Geesh, dude! That sucks! 🖖 Hello

I can't stand constant chatter about utter bullsh!t. Noise pollution. Especially for a creative mind.

"Noble Silence" is underrated. Big time!

Thank f*ck you made it out intact! The world would have been far less hilarious without your creativity.

It's one of the reasons I don't miss the office so much because of the endless chatter in it.

Than feck I can dodge it now for days a week!

That must be a massive relief

Meetings were my absolute worst part of corporate shite.

Utterly unproductive and what a waste of time. Sure that's why they have so many of them, in fact! :D

Glad you figured out how to bob and weave!

I reckon it's nervousness and anxiety. Humans trying to dodge the void. You can't, of course. You gotta get to know that fecker well enough to sit in silence with it comfortably.

Have a marvelous day, M (also... you are so lucky your initial is M! Don't let them shake or stir you at the orifice) 🌸

I may bob anjd weave but I still cant totally escape the funkers!

At one point I had to say to my boss that I physically couldn't go to more than 14 meetings a day. He was most put out. Dick.

I shall not let a single bod shake their bobbity at me in the orifice! Have a good one today missy :O)

Yeah!

You tell 'em all from me, "Go feck yerselves!"

So glad I don't have to go in to an orifice anymore.

Hang on... 🤨🧐

Have fun, M.

Your sense of humor is a superpower. They can try their best but a superhero always wins 👍🏼

(Except since Stan leveled up. Dunno who took over but he's a bit if a dark fecker, inny? I mean... Infinity War. Wtf even?)

So glad I don't have to go in to an orifice anymore.

Hang on... 🤨🧐

Lol!! Aye. The direction has certainly taken a bit of a turn!

Also... Happy Friday! :D
