Thirtyfor30: Fake it 'til you make it

At work, I look up to people who are calm and collected even when faced with the unimaginable upsets. They walk in meetings with confidence and solve problems like the problems at hand are the only things that mattered. Their unwavering focus amidst turmoil (in their personal life) is a skill I've been dying to emulate. But as fragile as any human being can be, the littliest incovenience at work used to set me in distress.

I knew I wanted to be mentally unbreakable so I followed my leaders' footsteps. Along the way, I learned they don't have the perfect life outside of work; they go through heartbreaks, they have sick or even dying family members, they suffer from physically illnesses, too. Afterall, they're just like me. But they show up and muster the courage to excel at work. Developing this skill was hard; I remember breaking down a couple of times at work for various reasons. I'd take a much needed comfort room break and bounce back with a red lipstick. Until one day, I found myself giving this advice to the individuals I've been honing in my team. They're all leaders/achievers in their chosen fields now and that's when I knew it's all paying off.

Faking it 'til you make it don't mean flat-out lying about competency at work or claiming to be a know-it-all. It's keeping yourself in one piece while going forward irregardless of how you feel. Just to be very clear, this is far from toxic positivity. You can and in fact you should still acknowledge that you're going through shit and decide to park your emotion until all the work is done.

This could be an unpopular opinion, but it worked out just fine, at least for me. I hope this is just as easy as singing Taylor's "I can do it with a broken heart!" but it isn't. Red lipstick helps! LOL! 😅 Wishing you luck!
