This year in the PNW, we experienced a very long drought into the beginning of Salmon season. It was also the 4 year cycle of the large Sockeye salmon return on the Fraser River, it was expected to be a large run with a great deal of recreational opportunities.
Normally with this 4 year cycle you can expect Sockeye to open in the ocean and on the Fraser River in mid August and go until beginning of September. This year DFO did not open it until second week of September, which is extremely late and resulted in a large bi catch of other salmon species where there was no retention allowed. With that being said I was still able to manage a very productive day with some friends, hitting a 4 man limit in only a couple of hours and bringing home a decent amount of Sockeye salmon to be used for fresh sashimi (After freezing it for over a week at -20 in my deep freezer)
