Orchid Update: Journal Entry #72 – Blooming Through the Storm

IMG_7706.jpeg

Hello, Orchid & Plant Loving Friends!

IMG_7705.jpeg

It’s a gloomy one out there today :( .. The kind of day that makes you want to hunker down with a cup of tea or coffee or whiskey (lol) and pretend the outside world doesn’t exist. Yesterday, we were basking in sunshine .. Huxley, my furry sidekick, was sprawled out by the back door, soaking up every golden ray. I’ve got the photos to prove it!

But today?

Total opposite. We’re talking 50 to 60 mph wind gusts, relentless rain, and a bit of chaos in the yard. The house took a hit.. We lost a piece of siding, and my poor Weber grill? It’s seen better days.

IMG_7715.jpeg

I’m still mourning that one. Last time it went airborne, I spent hours piecing it back together. For now, I just threw the cover on, locked it down, and called it a day. Tomorrow, I’ll play detective and see if it’s salvageable. Fingers crossed!

Moving On ..

But let’s not dwell on the storm outside. Tonight, I’m turning my focus inward—to the little bursts of life brightening up our home. It’s time for an Orchid Update, and trust me, these beauties are stealing the show.

In my last journal entry, I told you about the Phalaenopsis Orchid buds .. Starting to peek open, the red Cattleya showing off her two stunning blooms, and the Coconut Orchid just beginning to tease us with her budding fragrance. Well, things have leveled up since then! The Phals are now almost 3/4 of the way open. One of them went all out and unfurled every single bloom .. Talk about a show-off! The other two are pacing themselves, with a couple of buds still playing coy.

The Cattleya? Still holding strong, looking as elegant as ever.

And then there’s the Coconut Orchid. Oh my goodness, she’s gone wild! I don’t know if it’s the new pot or the extra water I’ve been giving her, but she’s blooming like there’s no tomorrow. 20 to 25 flowers, people!

The moment I walk into the room, her sweet, tropical scent hits me like a warm hug. It’s the kind of thing that makes you forget about busted grills and ripped siding (or so I tell myself). Pure magic.

The Other's

The orchids aren’t the only ones joining the party, though.. Our houseplant crew is stepping up too! The Peace Lily surprised us with a single, pristine white bloom that popped open last night .. PERFECT timing to lift the mood.

The African Violet? She’s thriving by the back door, where the light’s bright but not too harsh. She’s got a ton of new blooms, with more little buds on the way. I swear, that spot is her happy place.

IMG_7710.jpeg

And the Thanksgiving Cactus is at it again! She put on a massive show right before Thanksgiving (true to her name), and now she’s gracing us with a smaller encore for spring. She’ll rest up after this, but for now, I’m loving her festive spirit.

IMG_7720.jpeg

Beyond the bloomers, we’ve got a whole squad of healthy green houseplants .. Just doing their thing.. purifying the air, chilling out, and making the place feel alive. I’m honestly so grateful for them. The fact that I can keep them all thriving feels like a small victory, especially on days like this when the world outside is a mess.

IMG_7718.jpeg

So, that’s where we’re at! Huxley and I are about to cozy up and watch the wind whip the rain around like it’s auditioning for a drama. Maybe I’ll snap a few more pics of the indoor jungle to share next time. Until then, stay warm, stay inspired, and keep nurturing whatever brings you joy .. Whether it’s plants, pets, or just a quiet moment to yourself.

Catch you in the next entry!

We have been pretty gloomy too, getting a lot of rain yesterday and today. Dang, everything is looking create. The Thanksgiving cactus is awesome. We have managed not to kill our aloe plant yet, so fingers crossed on that!

You are doing great with that aloe plant. Simple fact it's still alive is a plus plus given you track record! Good job!!! I am pretty sure you are responsible for sending the rain and wind this way. Thank you Jay. 😜

Yes, it's definitely my fault!

I'm just getting a streak of good weather above 10 Celsius and put in some garden work today, getting my hands dirty making sure my early bloomers are on their way.
!LUVLovely blooms @bdmillergallery , I hope I get some good results from my indoor plants this year.

We measure in Fahrenheit so 10 is like 50 degrees here. Wow. Cool but not freezing. Good for you. I would definitely get out when it's 10C here except for the brutal winds off the ocean or from the mountains. Grrrrr. Better when it's 70 or 80F or 20 -27C.

Beat of luck with your plants!

The coconut orchid looks amazing indeed! I never had one, as I don't like much their growing pattern. But yours looks really nice and so bushy :)

They are great when they bloom but the are very tricky when it comes to water.. they LOVE water but not standing water. So I have to remember to water it every other day. uuggggg

Oh my. I am definitely not getting these :p
I will just admire yours :D

😆😝 Good Idea. lol

Beautiful all your Orchids, they as always thank you for your care. I can imagine how nice it is to be with them. Have a lovely day and have a nice day and solve the breakdown. 🤗😅

They are definitely rewarding me with beautiful flowers 😊

Wow! Your own private orchid show! It's so cool! My peace lily has 3 flowers atm, a first for it. I've not yet killed the African violet but it sure doesn't look as good as when it came home...sigh... You are much more diligent about care for house plants than I am!

I try my best, but sometimes I wonder why I have so many. lol. 3 flowers!?! wow. Ours puts one out at a time :(

Well, it’s the first time it’s done it. I’ve been better about care the last couple months but now the season is starting, that will change…

Another stunning bloom 😮 The Coconut Orchid? OMG! They are so beautiful ❤️ I see it forming the shape of a human figure mid-dive. That's what I see in the flower, lol

Oh true! I never noticed that before. Cool.
I love this Orchid due to its grass like looks but it can be a tough one when meeting watering requirements. It's a thirsty little gal.

They're so beautiful, unique, and elegant. Oh, they demand just the right balance, but with your care, they transform into vibrant plants that bring out nature's best.

Your blooms made my day
They’ve got a beautiful sight

Awwww.. Awesome to hear! 😊

It's raining a lot here, I haven't been able to go out to look for orchids! Hugs

Rain has a way of hindering our efforts! Hopefully you can get out and enjoy yourself again soon.
