Hello friends, orchid lovers! After "adopting" my own orchid and polishing myself on the subject, I began to do research on wild species in Portugal. For this small study I had to buy a book by (Josea Brites) and go out into the field to record different species throughout the country. I will use this community to make my "personal field guide." Today I was in the "Fonte Telha" area, a nature reserve with millions of years where I hoped to find something interesting... And of course that's what happened...📸👨🏻🏫

To get to the area where I might find orchids I had to look for something off the road, that is, go directly to the "Mato dos Medos" nature reserve. This reserve, with more than 300 hectares, was built by order of the King of Portugal, D. João V, around the 17th century. From there we get an idea of how important the area is for the ecology of the area. The beach is just under two kilometres away, so the dunes are the ones who do the work of preventing the sand from escaping and the water from destroying all of this!⛰️📸

As you can see, the passageways that I am going to take today are super ecological wooden walks which have an extension of more than 6km but to the sides is the area where it is not allowed to step and it is where I intend to locate my orchid, today I am looking for a particular species WHICH IS COMMON IN ECOSYSTEMS WITH LIMESTONE ROCKS and I read that this area has that particularity, let's see if I am lucky!👨🏻🏫🌷

Today we are going after the species: (Himantoglossum robertianum) here in Portugal it is known as the Giant Orchid and its name makes sense because I had never seen a wild one so big, passing my knee in height! We emphasize that this species IS NOT IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION NOR IS IT PROTECTED, so we should not worry because it is common throughout Portugal, in fact it is dispersed in the Mediterranean.👨🏻🏫🌷⛰️
How long does it take to locate it? How common is it?🌍🌷/Cuanto demoro en localizarla? que tan comun es?👨🏻🏫🚩
As I walk along I always look to both sides of the wooden paths and well, if I don't see any orchids I try to enjoy nature to the fullest. Now I see why this is a botanical reserve. In such a short time I saw three different species of fungi, as well as lichens and mosses. As it is winter there are no flowers so the biodiversity of insects and birds is lower.🌷👨🏻🏫
We arrived at the fossil area, is this where my orchid will be?🌍🌷/Llegamos al area fosil es aqui donde estara mi orquidea?👨🏻🏫🚩
This is one of the most important reserves of bivalve fossils in Western Europe. As you can see, the rocks are different and the landscape also changes. We can see spaces between the undergrowth, something that is particular to where our (Himantoglossum robertianum) lives. This rock formation is 10 million years old.🚩🧭⛰️

I was frustrated because I had walked for more than two hours and I couldn't see my orchid. It is supposed to bloom in the second week of January, so I should see it easily, but that wasn't the case! Despite being a "common" species, I see that this area doesn't have many orchids and I don't know if that is a negative aspect of the reduction of orchids in the Atlantic-Mediterranean area. I was wondering if orchids are slowly disappearing in Portugal? Why aren't there many?🌍🌲

According to this article, they are gradually disappearing due to habitat destruction and climate change. However, the most worrying thing in Portugal is the thousands of hectares that burn each year due to arson. Is that the answer?
About Himantoglossum robertianum🌍🌷/Sobre Himantoglossum robertianum👨🏻🏫🚩
This is a species of orchid that is distributed in Europe and grows on the ground, therefore it is "terrestrial", we can find it in the forest, weeds, open areas and roadsides, it has three bulbs at most and is quite robust and large, being able to measure more than 50cm, sometimes reaching 80cm. Normally, the orchid has 5 to 10 leaves, its inflorescence is of the "spike" type and has a slightly pyramidal shape, pollination is by insects and the seeds are spread by wind.😲👨🏻🏫🌷
