Cuando alguna vez pensé que podría dar una clase de literatura, primero, nunca pensé que sería de poesía; segundo, menos aún esperé que entre los libros que usaría estaría Altazor de Vicente Huidobro y; tercero, que la clase sería en la biblioteca del Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas.
When I once thought that I could teach a literature class, first, I never thought it would be about poetry; second, I even less expected that among the books I would use would be Altazor by Vicente Huidobro and; third, that the class would be in the library of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas.
Todo las oportunidades que me ha dado compartir con los amigos del museo han sido hermosas, y ahora que tuvimos este encuentro donde por primera vez fui moderador en el ámbito de la literatura, debo reconocer que ha crecido dentro de mí una gran felicidad. Además, quienes allí estuvieron tienen una gran sensibilidad para la lectura. Yo creo que todo el mundo puede leer, y más aún, que cualquiera puede leer poesía sin tener que haber atravesado una formación especializada en letras o similar. Y, aunque sé que estaba rodeado de artistas y son afines a las ideas de la estética y la imagen, creo también que cualquier humano que quiera adentrarse en el reino de la letras (modificando un poco ese verso de Lezama Lima) puede hacerlo siempre que lo haga con la humildad de ser transformado en ellas.
All the opportunities that I have had to share with the friends of the museum have been beautiful, and now that we had this meeting where for the first time I was a moderator in the field of literature, I must admit that a great happiness has grown within me. Besides, those who were there have a great sensibility for reading. I believe that everyone can read, and even more, that anyone can read poetry without having to have gone through a specialized training in literature or similar. And, although I know that I was surrounded by artists and they are akin to the ideas of aesthetics and image, I also believe that any human being who wants to enter the realm of letters (modifying a little that verse of Lezama Lima) can do so as long as they do it with the humility of being transformed in them.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar de temas como: las diferencias entre prosa y verso; un par de aspectos claves de lingüística; nociones de métrica, rima, encabalgamiento, imagen y texto; la función poética y la función prosística del lenguaje, entre otros temas. Todo ello acompañado con ejemplos para escuchar y leer. De entre todas estas cosas quiero destacar el ritmo, quizá la cualidad más importante para todo el arte y no solo para la poesía; esa es mi creencia. De este aspecto solo quiero citar una frase: ¿Qué es el ritmo? "Unidad dentro de lo multiforme" (Dominguez, J.)
We had the opportunity to talk about topics such as: the differences between prose and verse; a couple of key aspects of linguistics; notions of metrics, rhyme, enjambment, image and text; the poetic function and the prosistic function of language, among other topics. All this accompanied with examples to listen and read. Among all these things I want to highlight rhythm, perhaps the most important quality for all art and not only for poetry; that is my belief. From this aspect I just want to quote one sentence: what is rhythm? “Unity within the multiform” (Dominguez, J.).
