Oswaldo Guayasamín: HOMENAJE AL HOMBRE AMERICANO
Estimada comunidad de Hive, en esta oportunidad quiero comentarles sobre una pieza del artista ecuatoriano Oswaldo Guayasamín, la cual se encuentra instalada en el centro de Caracas en una de las edificaciones más emblemáticas de nuestra ciudad capital, como lo es el Centro Simón Bolívar, conocido también como las Torres de El Silencio. Este complejo arquitectónico contempla dos torres “gemelas” de 32 pisos, con construcciones laterales que incluyen áreas abiertas y cerradas como plazas, pasillos, portales, establecimientos comerciales, oficinas gubernamentales, estacionamiento subterráneo, etc., etc.
Oswaldo Guayasamín: TRIBUTE TO THE AMERICAN MAN
Dear Hive community, in this opportunity I would like to comment on a piece by the Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín, which is installed in downtown Caracas in one of the most emblematic buildings of our capital city, the Simón Bolívar Center, also known as the Towers of El Silencio. This architectural complex includes two 32-story “twin” towers, with lateral constructions that include open and closed areas such as plazas, corridors, portals, commercial establishments, government offices, subway parking, etc., etc.
El Centro Simón Bolívar fue inaugurado en 1954 y presenta 3 murales artísticos y decorativos, ubicados en los pasillos alrededor del complejo. Uno de esos murales fue realizado por Oswaldo Guayasamín, al que tituló “Homenaje al hombre americano”. Es de hacer notar que la producción pictórica de este artista se enmarca dentro de la corriente figurativa, cuyo tratamiento adquiere rasgos esquematizados acorde con los lenguajes que se desarrollaron a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX.
The Simon Bolivar Center was inaugurated in 1954 and presents 3 artistic and decorative murals, located in the corridors around the complex. One of these murals was painted by Oswaldo Guayasamín, entitled “Homage to the American Man”. It should be noted that the pictorial production of this artist is framed within the figurative current, whose treatment acquires schematic features in accordance with the languages that developed from the second half of the twentieth century.
Esta composición muestra los avances que había alcanzado Guayasamín dentro de sus búsquedas como artista. Forma y color, figura y fondo armonizan en un juego de contrastes tonales de claros y oscuros. Los cuerpos de rasgos geométricos, se acoplan a la técnica que le facilita el uso del mosaico como unidad cromática. Sumado a ello destaca una paleta reducida en colores puros y uniformes, como amarillo, rojo, azul, beige, negro y gris, lo que le otorga un fuerte impacto visual a todo el conjunto. Por otra parte, las dimensiones monumentales de la obra –6,50 x 5,50 metros– acentúa ese carácter de grandiosidad por el que tanto trabajaron los muralistas mexicanos.
This composition shows the advances that Guayasamín had achieved in his research as an artist. Form and color, figure and background harmonize in a game of tonal contrasts of light and dark. The bodies of geometric traits are coupled with the technique that facilitates the use of the mosaic as a chromatic unit. In addition, a reduced palette of pure and uniform colors stands out, such as yellow, red, blue, beige, black and gray, which gives a strong visual impact to the whole ensemble. On the other hand, the monumental dimensions of the work - 6.50 x 5.50 meters - accentuate the grandiose character that Mexican muralists worked so hard for.
Al lado de este mosaico hay una placa que colocó la Embajada de Ecuador en Venezuela, en agosto de 2013, que especifica el motivo por el cual Guayasamín fue proclamado “Pintor de Iberoamérica” que dice lo siguiente:

Next to this mosaic there is a plaque placed by the Embassy of Ecuador in Venezuela, in August 2013, which specifies the reason why Guayasamín was proclaimed “Painter of Ibero-America” which reads as follows:

Proclaimed by the IX Summit of Presidents and Heads of State in

Oswaldo Guayasamín nació en Quito, Ecuador, en 1919 y falleció en Baltimore, Estados Unidos en 1999. Fue pintor, muralistas y escultor, realizó múltiples exposiciones por las que recibió numerosos premios y reconocimientos, como la membresía de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, de Madrid, 1978, el título de doctor honoris causa por la Facultad de Arquitectura y Artes de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña,(UNPHU), y el premio Eugenio Espejo, 1992, entre otros muchos galardones.

Oswaldo Guayasamín was born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1919 and died in Baltimore, USA, in 1999. He was a painter, muralist and sculptor, and held multiple exhibitions for which he received numerous awards and recognitions, such as membership in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Madrid, 1978, the title of doctor honoris causa by the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña, (UNPHU), and the Eugenio Espejo Award, 1992, among many other awards.
