After the SUNSTEEM experience this was a thing on everybody’s mind, because the witnesses were topic in many conversations. And with the birth of Hive everybody , hopefully changed their list and voted for 30. Some people are still confused as to what a witness is. There's a lot of mixed information and i see so many with a few votes or none. There is maybe not enough new information as to what a witness does, and how much they earn. I'm here to clear this up with this post, with simple and short explanations where possible.
After the re~birth of Hive and the succes of the platform with all of you, we are also successfully onboarding. We are onboarding so many new people these days with so many great initiatives, via twitter, and for example the new HI FROM HIVE by @livinguktaiwan and all kinds of challenges that I feel there is a new blog needed to educate or better create awareness. Feel free to add any information in the comments , and I will adjust the blog.
Create awareness is the key, a key to knowledge but in a simple straight way to start with, so we have all accounts at 30 witnesses when they are blogging. Witnesses process the blocks that make up the entire blockchain. The chain on which you put your ideas, thoughts and daily must~writes on. If I may say pretty important.
Some people are still confused as to what a witness is. I saw that in the blog by @bluemist and as I had a draft on @peakd I decided to do the blog today.

What is a witness?
A witness is a fundamental part in how the blockchain, in this case Hive blockchain functions. Some people might not be aware of this, but without witnesses you cannot blog! A witness is a person who owns and operates a witness server (which produces the blocks on the blockchain), and they publish a price feed of Hive to the network.
So Witnesses first produce blocks, but second and even as important is they produce a price feed, which is how Hive B Dollars are always worth 1 US Dollar in Hive, using the 7 day exchange for reference and control.

Why should YOU care?
WITNESSES are voted for.
They get voted on, by people like YOU. People that love the blockchain Hive and blogging on Hive. It's just like an election, if you don't vote, other people may vote in witnesses who are malicious or simply unreliable.
Why would you want that?
Witnesses play the role of consensus (decide whether to hard fork or not) next one is scheduled.
I will do another blog about that later. For now voting is most important.
Many witnesses, work on important things to help the HIVE network function and grow, and get the word out that we are the best. I know many witnesses are frequent visitors in many discords to have answers to many questions. Or just to show they are dedicated. Some witnesses don't produce any content but do vote and comment on blogs by you and me.

Hey ya. Thanks for a big time reminder about @bluemist's post. I'm not having a real good week and didn't get it answered-yet :)
I believe really strongly that the witness voting limit should be lowered to 10 or maybe even 7. That and eliminating decay voting would do much to help with the witness transparency.
Anyway. I only vote for 12, and I have added/removed in the last week. I think it is just essential for citizenship on hive. We have several in common, you and I.
Thanks for a great post about a necessary subject!
But when now it's stil 30 and the reason we can blog so untill than could you consider 30 ?
I'm a big fan of 'be the change you want to see', so I'll stay limited. But I would consider adding witnesses outside the top 20...
I'm going to agree with @bigtom13 here @brittandjosie - Witness voting is incredibly complicated and we all have to respect that ultimately it is putting "Your Investment" in a cryptocurrency toward an account you hope will make your investment grow. So while currently we have 30 votes - if you only believe 5 accounts are going to help you Investment - then for sure you should only vote those 5.
I use all 30 of my votes, but that is because being a Witness I appreciate the costs involved - running servers, paying for them, the time taken to get the server running and the time needed to keep it running. Outside the top twenty I doubt any Witness is covering costs, I know I have never even broken even - and that's before I added two new servers to run my full node https://api.c0ff33a.uk
But as a Witness I am not running these servers and supporting the blockchain to gain rank - I'm doing it because I believe in Hive and the Blockchain, I have made many many good friends on here over the last three years and by running these servers I support the blockchain, my investment, and the friends I have made.
That said I really appreciate every single Witness Vote - I have 999 right now and to me that is an incredible number of people supporting my efforts.
Outside it perfect, let’s mix and they all do the work so Yes do it ! I have outside aswell

That's a really good summary of what the witnesses do and their functions without going into the politics of it all. It's definitely a good idea for everyone to review their witness votes periodically.
I tried my hardest. For all of us early adapters is something we done a lot. And review when something happens and changing. But 30 , 10 or 7 voting is needed so we need to educate more when you look at the lists from newbies some have NO votes. I hope it works and that many comment so we know what’s needed.

Thanks for this post. I always had a very general idea of the importance of the Witnesses for us and the correct functioning of the platform, in fact, my vote for the 30 witnesses was one of the first steps I took when I became a user but I really did not have a knowledge in detail of its functions which has become much clearer to me now.

Well the fact that it was one of the first things you did and votes is more than most people did, and we need to change that if we want to have a solid blockchain. So thank you and please tell your friends or ask the question: DID YOU VOTE YOUR 30 WITNESSES
About a month ago I did a post in which I mentioned that I removed my vote for 9 of them. Nine witnesses, who, in my opinion should be role models, were (at that moment) powering down substantial amounts.
A leader, leads by example. And considering the current (Hive)situation, hardly growing AND a price value that goes lower and lower, powering down to me a bad example of leadership.

Haven't checked after that, but some may have completed their 13 weeks by now.
At that particular moment it were 9 from the top 20. And 3 between place 20 and 30.
I ain't affraid for any downvote from them, but putting their names here could encourage to do as I did. And that was (and still) is Not my goal/aim with the act I did. It was something personal, something that I found I had to do to make a point.
If you wanna know who is still powering down simply go to that peakD witness list, click on nr 1, 2 etc. and then Wallet and see if and how much is being powered down every week

The fact that you took the time to read and learn and vote is nice. A proxy vote can always be revoked at any other day. So when you learned some more on the platform you can review again.

I think you did the same thing which you were complaining about others, maybe you did not read my post properly and only got stuck with appreciator part(still don't know why).
My objective was to know the REASON behind those votes. Just blindly voting 30 witness is not an accomplishment, you also need to teach people why to vote anyone, again my post was not guide on witnessship but you did a great post on How to vote any witness.
You did mentioned few names up there although you were saying you will not get into names. For example Why do you vote for c0ff33a or untersatz? I wanted to know what addition, addition or view they have which made you vote for them. It was that simple
Read i said, they ( the names that were in the blog ) were in our server the terminal, i wouldnt get into 3 names out my 30.
When I read the @bluemist post I thought that there is really a lot of ignorance about witnesses and their work, that is why in my post I wanted to convey this knowledge and the reasons why I chose them.
I don't fully know everyone's work and I still don't have my 30 votes, I think it's a job that needs time to think.
I believe that explaining the reasons why I chose these 3 will allow those who read me to know a little bit about the work they do and under their criteria and perhaps my opinion to cast a vote that until now they had not done.
I didn't do my post to help @bluemist to have something to read and vote on. I did it to apport something to the community.
The best way to help yours and our community is to vote for 30 , and learn what they do for hive so this might be your next project 😉
