The Inevitability of Changing Seasons... Including in Our Lives

There was a cold breeze blowing, this morning. I was outside with our dog, and without really knowing how, I sniffed the air and thought to myself "Yup, fall is here."

I expect we humans have been doing just that for millennia, without the benefit of calendars or the Farmer's Almanac.

Sure enough, by late afternoon it was clouding over in that way that "feels like rain." At this point, I had not actually looked at the online forecast... it was just a hunch. So I went to Weather Underground and sure enough... after a bone-dry summer — last time more than just a few raindrops fell on us was June 13th — there is real rain in the forecast for the next four days or so.

Sure enough... seasons change.

Of course, "seasons" are about a lot more than just changing weather, as our planet makes its turn about the Sun. There are also our personal seasons; the ebbs and flows of our lives. At 61 years of age, I have entered my "fall years."

But beyond that, so much of what we undertake in life is a game of seasons: We plan for something we want to do our accomplish (winter); then we "sow the seeds" of our project, launching it (spring); then we nurture it, water it and watch it grow (summer); and — if all goes well — finally we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor in a harvest of sorts (fall).

Upon reflection, I realize that I have often been involved in endeavors that are naturally seasonal, in the sense that their "high season" was during the indoor months of winter. And that still holds fairly true.

When I sit back and think about it, it's really quite amazing how many of these types of cycles run through our lives... so many things we undertake pass through the stages of planning, sowing, nurturing, harvesting, metaphorically speaking. Sometimes these are very clearly defined, sometimes the cycles are rather loose and abstract.

Even something like choosing to be a content creator on Hive could be viewed in this way: We start by planting a few "seeds," then we nurture and feed it by gradually powering up, and eventually we reap the benefits of our perseverance.

And "winter" is not necessarily the end or death of things; just the place where things start over.

But enough waxing philosophical! There's rain coming, along with a storm warning, so I'd best go make sure we don't have anything sitting around outside that's going to fly away!

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!

Hi old friend!

What a beautiful metaphor:) I didn't realize how much I missed this place, but I am certainly being reminded. So glad to see you here!

Definitely my favourite post of the day so far. Loved it! This is such a lovely way to view the passing of the years within our lives. The analogy to the seasons is perfect. It makes it all feel less hurried, more purposeful, more mindful. I suppose as we enter the autumn of our lives, they are filled with the wonderous colour of creation and we can step back in awe to ponder where we have come from and where we are yet to go... Hope there's no washing on the line ;-)
