For this weeks Show Us Your California contest by @thesocalhive I share a backpacking trip with some friends out in the...
Golden Trout Wilderness!!

I met up with a few friends in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains for a 4 day backpacking adventure in the Golden Trout Wilderness. We started our trip at the Jerkey trailhead and made the climb up to Jerkey meadows and followed down Jerkey creek to the Little Kern river. The river was raging from all the snow runoff. Luckily there was a bridge for us to get across. We crossed the bridge and made the climb up to Trout meadows. We took a lunch break by the meadow and filled up some water in the creek there.

From Trout meadows we continued up over a ridge and made a long drop over a thousand feet down to the Kern river. The river was huge! It was ripping, wide, deep, and fast. We headed up Kern canyon about a mile and found a great camping spot right near the lower Kern river bridge. We setup camp and I tried some fishing, but the water was moving way to fast to catch any fish.

The next day we crossed the river on the bridge and continued up Kern canyon to the Nine Mile creek trail. We headed up the Nine Mile creek trail passed Soda flats to the crossing of Nine Mile creek. Our plan had been to get a few more miles up the canyon to Jordan Hot springs, but when we saw how risky trying to cross the creek would be we had some second thoughts.

Nine Mile Creek
We walked downstream a bit and checked out Nine Mile falls which was really awesome with all the water gushing down over 200 feet! Then we tried going upstream a ways looking for any spot where we might have a chance of getting across the creek, but with no success. The creek was just to deep and fast. And with a 200 foot waterfall just downstream a fall into the creek would be certain death. We were pretty bummed that we couldn't make it to the hot springs, but there was nothing else we could do. We headed back down to the Kern river and found a really cool campsite which was, because of the high water, on an island between the main river and a smaller overflow creek formed by the overflowing river.

After another fun night of camping we headed back down the Kern river, we recrossed the bridge and then made the big climb back up out of Kern canyon to Trout meadows where we made our final camp for the trip. The last day we headed back down to the Little Kern, re-crossed the bridge and then climbed back up and over Jerkey meadows to the Jerkey trailhead where we first started. It was a long tough hike, but the awesome scenery and fun people made it a great adventure!

Wow another lovely adventure into the outdoors, that river is running wild, good idea to not cross.
Thanks for taking us with you to explore the wilds in your region.

Yep. 9 Mile creek is usually a small little creek, but all the melting snow from the high country had it raging. Any attempt to cross it could have easily been deadly. Thanks for checking out my adventure @joanstewart, and thanks for the tip!

Even the bare trees zone, that was probably my favorite together with the waterfall before that.
Thanks for sharing! Take care!
The trees in that area had gotten burned up in a forest fire a few years ago. It's kinda sad to see all the dead trees, but then it opens up nice views of the surrounding mountains. The waterfall was definitely the highlight of the trip.
I love all the pictures, you can see it is a beautiful land, congratulations to the photographer and congratulations for the camera you have
Thanks @carolinacardsoza! It is a beautiful land indeed.
Awww this is such a nice way to share what are really fantastic photos! It's like getting to go on a little adventure with you, without ever leaving the house! It just looks so beautiful wild and open there, I can see why the american wilderness is so inspiring - and alluring, and there is so much of it! Thank you for sharing, very much enjoyed looking through these with a cup of tea :)
Thanks @letalis-laetitia! We are lucky to have such big beautiful wilderness areas here in California.
What a wonderful travel!
Rebloged 🤗
Thanks @rem-steem!
Beautiful photos from what looks like what had to be some tough hiking! I wonder if anyone ever went white water rafting there, without knowing about the 200 ft. falls at the end. That would be a really awful surprise! 🙁
It was a pretty tough hike! I don't think anyone has ever tried rafting on Nine Mile creek. I hope not anyway. lol. People do raft down the Kern river though. It's actually pretty popular on the lower sections of the river.
Great photos, did you catch any fish?
Thanks @wonderwop! Unfortunately I didn't catch any fish. I tried a few times, but I think for the most part the water was just flowing too fast.
California never ceases to amazeme. The variety of sceneries, the inmensity of its land, mountains, rivers, beaches. It's simply incredible. It's like having severalcountries in one single state. From wilderness to super modernity and luxury. Quite a treat. These images are great; even the sad-looking pines make for a good picture
Yep, California is a really diverse place! From the beaches and the cities, to the forests, mountains, and deserts, we have something for everyone. Thanks @hlezama!
Beautiful scenery on your hike. Love seeing the dog. He carries his own supplies?
Yep!! We had 2 dogs on this hike and they both carried dog backpacks with their dog food.
Well written journey
Thanks @angel33!
Congratulations friend @derekrichardson for having had the joy of making such a wonderful journey and having captured those beautiful images.
A greeting
Thank you @librepensadora!
What a beautiful trip! How I would love to do that!! Thanks for sharing all the pics. Even the dog has a back pack, love it!
Thanks @blueeyes8960. Yep, the dogs carried all their own food!
I love your California
Me too! lol. Thanks Britt.
What a great trip, @derekrichardson! I love that area so much. Too bad about the hot springs, but it’s great that you made the decision not to risk your lives! The lupin is really pretty. Wow.
It's a lovely area. It was a bummer to not be able to get to the Hot Springs, especially because we were only a couple of miles away. But it was still an awesome trip. The Lupin was blooming all over!
That's a fantastic adventure. Too bad you couldn't cross the creek, but that waterfall was absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks @wwwiebe! It was a good one for sure. The waterfall was epic! It was flowing so strong you could really see and feel the power of the water.
Amazing adventure! Looks like a fantastic trip!
Thanks Brian! It was a great trip despite us not getting to the Hot Springs.
