We do have apples, although they are imported, and they cost an arm and a leg. At about 3$ a piece, that would mean to spend half a month salary for the average folk.
They used to be abundant and cheap, the same with grapes, and people bought them especially in december as part of the traditions. Now they are a luxury that separates the have from the have nots
