Fluted Pumpkin & Cocoyam Harvest: A Season of Abundance

Hello Hive

On the early morning of Christmas Eve, I went to my farmland to harvest cocoyam and fluted pumpkins. I had planned this a day earlier because the harvest was overdue, and some of the cocoyam seeds were starting to spoil because of the hotness of the soil. My mum was preparing a delicious meal for me to enjoy when I returned. The aroma filled the air as I set off for the farm.

I went with my beloved nephew, carrying some bags, a machete, and a hoe. The harmattan breeze was at its peak, and the morning sunlight was gentle. Honestly it gives me joy seeing my farm products growing healthier.

As you can see, cassava is the major food crop cultivated here, primarily because of its versatility and widespread consumption.

Before I can get started on harvesting the cocoyam, I first checked on my fluted pumpkins. I carefully inspect each one to see if it is ready to be picked.

I was able to find few that were ready so I quickly picked them. It's quite risky leaving them under direct sunlight so i found a shaded area to keep it while i harvest cocoyam.

I wasn't impressed with the cocoyam as it didn't yield to my expectations. I think this is a general case because a friend also complained about it. In fact, I would say it's what the season brought; every cultivation year is not the same.

Cocoyam harvest was quite easier compared to cassava harvest.
One of the challenges i faced was accidentally cutting cassava roots underground, this is one of the potential drawbacks of mixed cultivation .

This doesn't look good at all but I've to be more careful next time.
My overall experience of the harvest was overwhelming, especially for my nephew who was with me. He constantly asked me questions about the farm products.
