5am yesterday I was on the road to town for a quick trip for grain. I had put it off on Sunday which worked well due to my stupid headache.
I got to the brewery in 20 minutes thanks to the ZERO traffic at that time of the morning. The 2 barrels were more full than normal but I had them loaded quickly and was on my way back north for the farm.
In just the 30 minutes between my drive down and my drive home the traffic on the bypass increased TONS.
I got the boys to school then spread the grain on the pole garden since the half had not been coated yet. I may use the poles this year but am thinking of not and just growing spuds here.
So I went to town for my dentist appointment but had the time wrong and was there an hour early. I rescheduled for Wednesday and headed for North 40. As I was heading for the bypass my truck got a hard knock in the engine. I had checked my oil a couple months ago at the beginning of December and it was just a tiny bit low. I grabbed a bunch of oil and the new belts for the tiller and headed out. I popped a quart in the truck and headed for home gently.
I got home and checked the oil level which was stupid low. I have no idea how my truck burned that much oil in the few months when it hadn't at anytime before. I poured a bunch of oil in and let the truck idle for a bit. I went and got the belt on the tiller and got it parked in prep for the garden work.
The knock wasn't sounding much better so off I went to North 40 again to get engine restore in hopes of saving the lifters etc. WELL... as I pulled onto our road the intermittent knock became a constant as whatever let loose. Something broke and I limped the truck to my parking spot then began the process of tearing it down.
After an hour I had myself down to the valve covers and then after another hour I had myself into the valves where I saw nothing visibly wrong on top which means I have to go much deeper which means removing timing, heads, and all the rest of the top block.
MOTHER FUCKER!!!!!!!!!!
I am soooooo pissed. I knew I needed to change my oil and had it on my list to do this week, but obviously was too late. It makes me sooo frustrated, angry, and disappointed in myself for letting this happen.
There is potential for rain in the forecast so I pulled out the canopy and set it up over the front end of the truck. This gives me cover from weather, keeps shit out of the engine bay, and gives me a place to setup a light so I can see better and work later.
The engine is part way exposed. Thank GOD I have the factory service manual that covers the 05-12 models of Tacoma. I printed out the 40 pages of relevant info and have that to work from.
The driver side front cam of the camshaft looked pretty black but the rest looked okay, that plug was the hardest to remove too.... SOOOO the likely hood is that cylinder is the problem. The knock sounded like it was from that region and I really hope it wasn't a piston letting go.
The fucking joy of having one vehicle now... @stryeyz took R to practice and picked him up. We soaked once they were home and I barely made the half hour due to my shitty skin again. Back to the prednisone I go.
I will get the boys to school, drop @stryeyz at work, head home for a bit then have my chiro appointment. The rest of the day is going to be tearing the engine out of my truck or at least down as I hope to NOT have to remove it completely... though that may be required in which case I will have to go buy a cherry picker at harbor freight.
FML!!!!
And the worst part of all of this is this is the exact same problem I had in my old Yota that sits nose to nose with my new one. That one did not run out of oil but just broke in the lower end...

I have a Hazard Fraught engine hoist I can lend you. I'm just not sure about getting it in and out of the Friend-Shaped Car, assuming I can also get to where it is stored.
My hope is to NOT have to pull the block, but thanks I will keep it in mind!

Sounds like it might be a weak point with this Toyota 😳
I hope it isn’t too bad!
