It was crunch day yesterday for the farm. With impending frost there was a boat load to get done before dark. I managed to get going by 9am and made my rounds to make the mental list of tasks for the day.
I had the PDC Swiss darts on and split screen with the Man Utd match until after half time when the team got utterly embarrassed by the Spurs. They are SO awful this year there is going to be a major melt down and everyone will get fired and traded. Billion dollar team is worth pennies. I turned it off knowing the outcome would be awful.
The PDC went better by far and there were some big upsets.
My first harvest of the day was the 3 summer squash meant for seed. The biggest is 16 pounds and the other 2 are 7 and 9 pounds.
I was back in the house in time to catch the quarter final match for Barney which he lost to Schindler who went on to win the event.
In the greenhouse I had some peppers and the few remaining cucumbers to pick.
Then I pulled the handful of Walla Walla onions I had grown in the greenhouse, started from seed. Normally it takes longer to get them to grow so it was a great test.
The beet rows had to get pulled. I hacked all the leaves off which went to the sheep while the roots went to the deck.
These moths are the white underwings and they feed on willow and birch. Must have been the warmer winter last year? Or maybe prep for the coming weather weirdness?
The house plants had to get moved out of the greenhouse but this year they are not coming in the house since our big slider is UV blocking so they don't grow well.
So to the studio they went where the windows are ancient and not UV blocking. I mounted my grow light overhead on a timer and hauled all the plants inside. The citrus are on the plant stand.
It was super windy all day long with gust up over 30mph. The trees didn't have a ton to let loose but there was still debris flying.
The herbs all got set on the table where the 4 thyme and 3 rosemary should do okay for the winter.
The basil had been hit by the last cold and had some dead parts that I had to cut away before I pulled the plants and cut the roots off.
7 pounds went to the cooler but a lot of it is stem weight.
I probably should have thinned them over the year but the row of bunching scallions were huge.
They all pulled up amazingly and the roots all shook the dirt off easily.
Half the row filled the one tub.
Then the other half filled the other tub.
35 pounds in all!!!
Each tub got dumped into a wax box and set in the cooler.
I rolled the garden fence back to allow me to drag the summer squash plants over to the sheep pen.
I staged them outside then hauled them in in batches and spread them around the pen.
Happy animals browsed through the sudden glut of tasty morsels.
That left just the potatoes still in the end row.
As it got later in the afternoon and the chill hit the air I got the greenhouse closed up to retain heat then went and grabbed some of my row cover supports. I stabbed them into the ground over the celery rows then got 2 lengths of row cover over them.
I covered all the potato rows in hopes of saving them long enough I will be able to dig them all.
Late afternoon I went for a quick wander up the hill to check on the upper property after the second wind storm. It was just a slew of pine needles coating the ground.
Some pretty solid 30+mph gusts came through.
AS it got towards dark I got the last of the plants in the house.
Soaking was nice after all the work during the day.
It did freeze overnight and hopefully the heat lamp in the greenhouse kept it just warm enough. I will be out to check after I get J to school. I have to get things ready for my climbing and wood cutting trip to the Crest the end of the week, more cleanup around the farm, winter prep, and I have to put flat stop in one trailer tire.

I must know what you're planning to do with all those scallions! I love following your homesteading adventures and I am looking forward for my container garden to get started again!
I think we will be drying and freeze drying a lot of them, but it is a bit more than I expected so we are going to have to figure out what all to do with them.
What about mincing them and freezing them in molds for cooking?
Our problem ends up the freezer space needed.
That's a good point. What about mincing, then spreading it out to freeze dry? Would that save on space?
Yeah we will have to chop them down to fit the trays for the freeze dryer. With so many we may blend some down to liquid then freeze dry to get powder.
Can't wait to see that.
