Woo boy howdy did it ever dumps some snow yesterday! Inches and inches of the stuff! What's cracking me up is this winter is sorta toddler-like. We got all of our single and below digit cold and the vast amount of our season's snowfall all in a couple week period, only for the climate to say, so there and it's forecast to be almost fifty degrees next week.
I don't care about your fit throwing, Margaret, go eat your broccoli!
Okay, that was probably weird, but I am going to blame it on my short circuiting carcass and the fact that I have a plethora of assignments due over the next four days. So many that I am probably not going to be in the right mind next time I write a blog post. Hmm, alright, I am probably never in the right mind, I don't even know what that means.
Anyway, I had every intention of starting my onion and pepper seeds on Saturday, but then life intervened and we had to do family things. I've got three grandparents who are not doing very well right now, so Saturday was spent on grandparent care concerns.
Which of course meant that Sunday became plant starting day! I cannot tell you how overjoyed I was to dip my digits into some soil mix! I swear my internal mood meter topped out in Happyville!
Yes, I will quit with the exclamation points now, but I was just so delighted to be gardening again.
Yesterday, I got out an old plug tray, cut it into thirds, stuffed it with seed starting mix, and got to planting onions. I started three different kinds, two reds and a yellow, and then placed the little plug trays I had fashioned into the drawers of my repurposed plastic cart that I had placed in front of our sunniest window. I'm curious to see how the seeds germinate in the cart, because I haven't done it this way before. They will only be in there for a couple weeks as it's going to warm way up and I will get off my duff and get the greenhouse situated for their arrival.
I also did a couple cups of bunching onions and some leek seeds. The leek seeds are so cute, I had forgotten that they look like little gold nuggets. I haven't grown leeks in years, but the hubs expressed a desire for some, so I thought why not.
The bunching onions that I started in the repurposed red Solo cups are all going to be planted in clumps in the rose garden. I already have chives out there, and I want to have clumps of bunching onions right out the front door to grab at will. We eat a lot of green onions, so I started 400 of them!
I also started 450 onion seeds, as we eat a ton of onions too, and honestly I always start way more than I need because I tend to give things away. It's just how I roll.
The pepper seeds were started in the way I always start peppers and tomatoes, sprouted between paper towels in a plastic wrap covered pie plate on top of the fridge. This method always just works for me, and I went easy on myself this year in the pepper department. I only started 12 Aconcagua peppers, 12 Anaheim chiles, and 12 mixed hot chiles, a very reasonable amount for me. (The hoop house is going to be so delightful!)
As soon as the peppers sprout and are transplanted into containers, they too will go in the cart until they are moved out into the greenhouse. The cart makes me happy because it provides a layer of protection for my little plant babies. There are always felines lurking round here...
And now, now I must go get some human biology done. I think this week is the muscular system. Gotta go thug it out as the youths like to say...

Good on ya growing your onions from seed. I must confess to buying onion sets. When I started off growing about 5 years ago I tried seeds but had no success. Perhaps now I'm a bit more experienced I should give it another go...next year.
Most years I grow sets too, but this year I am really diving back in to the gardening realm. Plus, I love giving the little budding onions frequent haircuts, it's kinda satisfying lol!
(I also said next year for about the last five years, so I so get it!)

It feels to wintry still for starting seeds, but the forecast and calendar suggest otherwise. I'm still planning to go snowshoeing in the woods today.
I hope it was a pleasant tromp, especially after all that shoveling!
