A-Day In My #HOMESTEAD FARMLAND: Planting, Nurturing, Harvesting & Preservation of GREEN BEANS.

Season Greetings To everyone here in the @homestead community, i love agriculture, i love having a conversation with the earth when i'm planting and looking after my plants, have we have a small piece of land right in front of our home were we plant and nurture varieties of crops just for our family's consumption.

So today will be talking about how to effectively grow and nurture the green beans, good for making salads, used as vegetables for all kinds of meals, fried rice, vegetable rice, you name it.

Common green beans, scientically known as phaseolus vulgaris originated from south and central America, Historical evidence has it that beans were cultivated in Mexico and Peru for millennia they were later introduced to the Mediterranean by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became prevalent in Italy Greece and Turkey by the 17th century

Beans are classified into two categories Bush beans and pole beans, Bush beans are compact reaching about 2 ft in height and do not require sticks, on the other hand pole or green beans are climbing beans are vines that can grow 10 to 15 ft tall and need or sticks for support

in addition to their health benefit beans are easy to grow and a great source of fiber vitamin C, beta-carotene, folate, potassium and protein according to the American heart Association they are fantastic addition to any garden due to their politic impact on both our health and a garden well-being

Beans are legumes and possess nitrogen fixing abilities, specific bacteria colonize their roots extracting nitrogen from the air and converting it into a form that nourishes the plant actually remarkable process I wish you could replicate ourselves 😄👍

Growing green beans is so easy that they are often the first vegetable children learn how to grow all green beans are incredibly productive even in containers here how to plant grow and harvest green beans and lend the upside and Downside of bush versus poor varieties

PLANTING

Beans grow best in well-draining soil with normal fertility and and acidic to neutral pH, they don't typically need supplemental fertilizer because they are fixed their own nitrogen in the soil however particularly pulsory should still be amended with aged manure or compost in the fore prior to planting about a week before planting.
beans don't like having their root disturb so set up any support for green beans before to planting.

How To Plant
For bush and green beans both require good soil condition, good exposure to sunlight and pest control so they don't die off easily, make sure to prepare the soil you can choose to add organic manure or not, for planting proper for the bush beans 1 inch deep and two inch apart in rows, for the green beans 1-inch deep placing them around their supporters.

Here's some guiding tip, when planting make sure not to dig too deep cause it might cause the beans to struggle during germination and could die off.

NURTURING

PREPARE an Elevated ground a little bit to retain the moist when watering, make sure it is well-drained, beans have shallow roots so wet ground keeps them warm for easy germinating and growth, water regularly if you do not keep beans well watered they might die off or not flourish well,

Weed diligently but carefully to avoid disturbing the beans roots, pitch off the tops of pole beans vines when they reach the top of the support this will force them to put energy into producing more pods instead, pay more attention during hot weathers so they dont wither and die, and not to hamper growth thereby reducing harvest, constantly nurturing and cultivating makes green beans to blossom well and produce more.

HARVESTING

Harvest can be done anytime, most especially in the morning, you can harvest green beans everyday the more you pick the more it grows and bare, green beans are picked young and tender before the seeds inside are fully developed, look for firm sizeable pods that are firm and can be snapped, generally they are as thick as a pencil, snap or cut the beans off the plant being careful not to tear the plant, fresh beans should snap easily once you notice the seeds inside the pods bulging its ready for harvest

HOW TO STORE GREEN BEANS

Store Beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for atleast upto four days, however can get toughen overtime best used immediately after harvest atleast store for a few days.
