About Sweet Corn 🌽

Sweet corn is a tender, warm-season annual crop that produces ears of yellow, white or multi colored kernels, sweet corn comes very handy especially when used to garnished your meals or used to prepare vegetable rices used in salads and any other meal as preferred.

I'm our homestead we plant just a few rows of sweet corn just for our consumption and I'm delighted to share in my experience in how to plant grow and nurture the sweet corn.

A long, frost-free planting season 60-100 days is necessary to grow and Harvest corn. Don't be tempted to sow too early though, mid to late spring is just fine once any chance of frost is over

Sweetcorn is a grass, a member of the poaceae family, they rely on wind not bees or insect to pollinate it's flowers, this is why we plant them in rows instead of long single rows

Alright as you can see our sweet is all grown and it's best to harvest on time while it's still tender before it becomes hardened, sweet corn are easy to plant and nuture not to many procedures just have a good soil, manured, prepared and weeded well to avoid pest infestation.

How To plant sweetcorn
To speed germination, moisten seeds wrap them in a moist paper towels and store them in a plastic bag for 24hours because corn is win pollinated its essential to plant in a block rather than a single row, usually planting four seeds in a hole of not less than 2cm is recommended, the reason been that the corn germinating in clusters will grow stronger and stand strong able to with sand any strong wind, daily watering is recommended, weeding carefully not to disrupt plant and to keep off pest.

HARVESTING
The warmer the air the more quickly cown matures it is usually ripe about 15 to 23 days after silky, and sooner if temperature are exceptionally high, when two ears grow on a stock the upper ear majures 1 to 2 days before the lower one

At harvest ear should be rounded or Blunt not pointed with tassels turning brown and kernels Full and Milky to test pool down some husk and Pierce a karnal with a fingernail if it's white or Milky it's ready the milk stage is brief in hot weather, to pluck pull down and twist to remove from stalk.

Sweet corn varieties (except for super sweet varieties) lose their sweetness soon after harvest if kept for too long, immediately after picking prepare the years for eating or Preservation

Prepare for eating or preserving immediately after harvest, enjoy your harvested corncobs as soon as you can the quicker they are cook the sweeter they will be if immature corn suffers a late season Frost can result in the death of plant or poor testing corn.
