Greetings friends in the Homesteading community, it's been a nice day for me and my family, hope your day is super fantastic. It's your friend @inspiredbyhive saying hello from this part of the world.
One of the gifts that our dad gave to us as his children was the gift of agriculture and since we have some spaces in our compound we practiced many aspects of homesteading ranging from palm tree nursery, poultry, goatery as well as piggery.
When we were kids we followed our dad and home who we met keeping some domestic animals and nursing some plants for local and domestic cultivation. We unconsciously learnt how to cultivate and rear animals by watching the process. As we grow up, we were asked to feed the goats and plant the palm trees ourselves. Sometimes I in particular was angry if I was the only child that must learn all these agricultural stuffs.
Little did I know that agriculture was and is still the crust of the world's economy and survival. I was constantly asked to go to the field to get grasses and leafs for the goats and I became used to the entire process.
A decade ago, I started my own goat homesteading in the compound where I live. Since I wasn't in the same city with my dad, I had to ask him to send some kids to me so I can start my own goatery.
Me sent me a male and two female kids. That's how I started my goatery. Goat keeping is less capital intensive in the area I live, because goats feed on grasses, leafs and leftovers which could be gotten from the neighborhood.
I started with those three kids and 3 months later both female goats became pregnant and after about 4 to 5 months they both have birth to 1 kid each. It didn't take long after they gave birth, they took in again.
One of the interesting thing that happened in my goat farm was that in every three to four months, I was expecting my goats to give birth and the kids that are up to 3 months to take in. Within a year, my goat farm increased to about 15 goats and after 2 years of not selling them they numbered about 50 and more goats in my farm.
How to Make Goat Feed With Household Leftovers?
One of the best leftovers that my goats admired is the yam pills. Anytime we cooked yam in our house, we reserve the back of the yam to use in feeding our goats. Also, we make our goat feeds with beans chaff. When separate the beans from the chaff, we don't throw away the chaff.
Goats also feed on plantain leafs and since we have plantain plantation in our compound, we usually cut some fallen plantain leafs to feed our goats.
The best feed that we don't miss in a day is the elephant grass. The elephant grass serves as fibre to the goat.
The most difficult part of goat farming is cleaning up the farm. It's very hectic any day I want to clean the farm. I usually set out that day to do the cleaning. Apart from feeding and cleaning up the farm, the rest is profit making.
Why I said this is because vaccinating and giving medications are not regular in the kind of breed of goat we have in our area. Local dwarf goat are the best to keep in Southern Nigeria.
Finally, I'm known for goat machandize in my area and I'm really making huge profits from my goat farm.

Actually I keep them for meat purposes.
Great post! I'm hoping to get a few goats someday soon myself. I've been waiting for my fruit trees and a few other perennial foods to mature a bit more, so that we will have more stuff here to feed them and not have to buy a lot of food. My main use for them for the milk, which I understand is quite a bit more difficult with goats than with dairy cows, but I don't have space for a cow here.
Mine is actually for meat, although I've not learnt the necessary way of milking goats, but if I could I'll do that. Thanks for stopping by.
Nice keep it up.
