Hello Everyone!
Ye ole delivery services, Changing shopping habits, A light duty day, Limited camping options & Probing for water!
Alright, I am running about an hour and a half behind schedule... with what I was aiming for with my writing routine today... but all in all at least I am here and the temperature outside is nice and cool. The reason that I got off track with my timing is because I had made an order to a grocery delivery service... and had to meet them at the driveway... and then I got way over involved with eating strawberry ice cream and brewing espresso!
Nearly everyone I know who I have communicated with along this journey... have asked me how am I going to get to the stores once a month to do my shopping. As funny as it is... I found someone to help with that my very first week here... and then not long afterwards... I discovered a delivery service through which I can get pretty much anything that I might need from a grocery store... including gallons of water.
For the little extra cost... it has been well worth it not to have to worry about how, when and with who I am going to do my shopping... plus the delivery times are super frigging fast. Once I get settled in here more... and have somewhere to store groceries securely... I might switch to either getting two deliveries a month or just one big delivery each month and be done with it.
Compared to plenty of the other scenarios that I have been in... just having adequate cellular service... and being able to get deliveries... is a massive boon with this place. Soon enough I will also have a mailbox and can begin receiving mail... which yup is another one of those things that I have all too often gone without having... or only having indirect access to.
Anyways, I fell asleep not all that long after sunset last night... and awoke at pretty much the exact same time that I have been getting up each morning. To be clear, I am still waking at four thirty in the morning each day... but have been letting myself nap another three hours when my mind (and all its thinking) lets me.
This morning I realized just how bone weary tired that I am... and figured that it was probably in my best interest to have a 'light duty' day... and take a step back from the larger projects that I have been working on. In other words I gave myself a much needed break today... and wound up walking around with my big tape measure a lot, measuring out areas (for the big tents) and doing lots of head scratching over it all!
When it comes down to it there are just so many factors with this place... and its terrain... that many of the 'okay' areas for camping happen to be very exposed to the roads. Then as I have stated before... a solid three quarters of the land itself is one big watershed with a dozen or more potential spring heads peppered along just the top of its crest.
That whole area more or less just needs to be left alone... and especially so until I figure out what the water is doing there. It is difficult to paint an accurate picture of what I mean about the area being 'pristine' (aside from some long ago logging) but yeah I would like to keep it that way... aside from creating a few watering pools and developing the paths and trails.
Where I am currently camped at is way too close to the power line easement for my liking... and although I keep searching for a new spot to setup camp at... I have yet to find anything all that promising. Eventually, I am sure that I will find some nook or cranny to occupy here... but as of now the hunt for such a place still continues.
Speaking of hunts, I took my rock bar to the downhill side of the property today and did some gentle probing around a bunch of low spots and boulders down there... but did not happen to find any water. It is kind of maddening because right across the road from me is a creek... that flows year round... and I can constantly smell the fresh water in the air.
The only really hard work that I did today was using the rock bar to probe that last hole more (without any success) and I also gathered some slate to cover the hole with. I am unsure if it is a type of shale... or if it is actually slate... but it does not look quite as flaky as shale.
Well, I am going to call this entry 'good enough' and get on with the editing and posting. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.
Have you checked to see if there are any fish or crawldads in the creek?
Nope I have not looked. The creek goes through many other peoples property and I would have to go onto one of them to look because it is not super close to the road in this area.
On the seventh he rested evidentally. ;)
