Adventures In Homesteading (Day 324)

Hello Everyone!

Lots of rain, A wicked late night storm, Rainwater sans pollen, Amber jelly rolls & Plenty of green sprigs!

Alright, I am more than feeling a little worn around the edges today... but am going to do my best to peck out an entry without resorting to brewing some nightly espresso. All the fatigue that I am feeling is thankfully the result of having been so busy of late... combined with a wicked late night thunderstorm that upset the dogs and kept me awake way longer than I wanted to be.

I know that I have mentioned just how intense the storms are (and how exposed I am on the hill to them) but last night's storm had the kind of thunder and lightning that left a crackle in the air... along with the distinct smell of burnt ozone. In other words, I was quite relieved that all that I got directly was a bunch of rain... instead of getting hammered by lightning strikes.

All that jazz aside, it was good timing with the rain (and especially with getting a heavy downpour) because I was needing to get more rainwater collected. Much of the rainwater that I had collected over the previous month or so has had a lot of pollen in it... and although I have my 'drinking water' barrel sealed against it all the other vessels had collected a lot of it inside of them.

I made a mental note to stock up on more of it in next time before the pollen starts dropping for the year... so perhaps... in the future... I can avoid such a scenario. The pollen really did not seem to alter the water too much... but whoa the water did not stay as 'fresh' for nearly as long as it usually does due to the pollen decomposing in the water.

Just before the rain really picked up around sunset last night, I also made sure to lift the overflow line on my gravity-fed system's holding tank. Previously, I had forgotten to lift it up (after draining the system against freezing) and I missed out on gathering a good twenty odd gallons due to my oversight.

Okay, it looks like I am going to need that nightly espresso to get through this entry after all! I have been making a concerted effort to just go to bed in the evening without it... but needing to make these entries each night has made that challenging to say the least.

Anyways, I hiked around a little this morning during a break in the rain... and found a branch covered in 'Amber Jelly Roll' mushrooms that had fallen on my tent. Needless to say, I was super happy about finding them... and after fetching the branch off of the roof of the tent... I set about eating almost every mushroom off of it... in short order... with great delight.

The tent itself was okay given that the 'rain fly' absorbed most of the branches fall... but the tent is starting to 'dry rot' (from the UV) super fast due to no longer receiving much shade. So far, I have only spotted one large tear in one of the door flaps... and honestly I should have repaired it with some flashing tape when I first noticed instead of putting it off.

On a brighter note, I noticed today that pretty much everywhere that I planted that bird seed at (except where the chickens found it) now has lots of sprigs of green shooting up. This was especially the case in all the flower pots that I planted them inside of... and had placed in the newly created fenced area in that shaded area.

I am still racking my brain on how to get other kinds of seeds... and especially how to get some corn... but for now, I am happy to see the bird seed experiment going so well. Once I have the funds for it, my next move is going to be to order a bunch of fresh vegetables from that store in an adjacent town... along with several bags of potatoes.

Who knows if any of the seeds from the vegetables will be viable... or if the potatoes will be viable... but I am so desperate to get stuff growing right now that I figure it will be worth the effort to at least try. As a side note to all of that, I am thinking that if I get enough food growing here perhaps I can use said food to attract more wildlife.

Well, I am fading fast here... and the fatigue is starting to kick in regardless of the espresso... so I best call this entry 'good enough' and get on with the editing and posting portion of things. I hope that most folks are doing well. Ciao for now ye ole unfortunate reader!

There have been lots of pretty days lately!

Terima kasih banyak.

I forgot to say this in your last post. I love Sassafras tea, Dad used to collect it out at the Stick Marsh when I was a kid. I wish I could find it now, but they have flooded most of it and the rest is road. :(

I love it too. I debated plucking that one up to make tea but I have not seen any more of them around here. Once it gets large enough I will propagate it so that I have more of them.

I bet you will find more,m maybe that one was an early bloomer

There are probably more around here somewhere. I have not spent nearly as much time getting to know the place as I usually do with land.
