Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 1234)

Hello Everyone!

Plenty of rest, Electric service research, Washing totes & Balancing the packing workload!

Alright, I am running fifteen minutes behind schedule with my writing routine this evening. I am also still feeling a bit groggy from a late day nap... so bear with me while I get some espresso in me and get my mind in gear.

After all of yesterday's activities, I fell asleep much earlier than usual... and wound up waking up long before sunrise. I did not quite have it in me to 'get up and about' though (because my body was aching) and I wound up drifting back off to sleep for a few more hours before waking a final time and beginning my day.

As usual I did my Hive engagement routine as soon as I got up... and after that I moved on to doing more research into getting electricity service at the new land. Long story short there, my findings were not all that encouraging... because in the permitting process they require a septic permit and at least the footers for a dwelling/building to be in place.

Basically, they do not allow any 'free standing service' (which is just a pole and meter/breaker box) like I had thought that they would do... and now I have to rethink how I am going to get electric service. I could not find all the types of service available... so I will need to research more to see if they have an 'agricultural' service or something similar that will not require having a septic system.

Anyways, after feeling pretty bummed out by that revelation... I got outdoors so that I could get caught up on some of my routine chores... and of course do more packing related tasks. Doing the former was not all that bad... and I even got that other blanket and sleeping bag washed out and hung back up to dry.

As for the packing related tasks goes the only things that I worked on was getting those 'contico' boxes and a big tote scrubbed with bleach water... along with washing the funk off of more lumber. As far as the boxes (and the tote) go I think that I got them clean enough for my purposes... but whoa that lumber is going to take a lot more scrubbing to get it ready for paint.

Overall, today was not super productive... but that is just going to be how it is because I cannot quite pull off doing one highly productive day after another... without getting totally burned out. My latest strategy is to do one day with a heavy workload... followed by a day of doing light duty tasks... which should not only help me avoid feeling constantly fatigued... but also leave me enough time to do my routine chores.

Well, I think that is all the words that I have in me for this entry. I hope that everyone is doing well. Ta ta for now.

I have been looking into the very same issue. It turns out in my case the original investment to get electricity to our land will be more expensive than buying and setting up a couple of solar panels and batteries. Solar batteries really do have their downsides and need maintenance but also lots of positives too! Could you go solar at least in the mean time while you get the first dweling built?

I was thinking about doing solar instead but am unsure if the site gets enough sun to make it worthwhile.

I was already planning on setting up the solar panels that I have but a much larger system would be ideal. The down side is that if the system is too big (like one large enough for a residence) it would need its own permit. I am unsure if it would require a septic to be in place also.

Yes the location is so important. We are waiting to decide between two spots until after the winter solstice, we want to be sure that even at the solar minimum there is enough sun to at least get by.
But as for the size of the system I was really surprised at how much smaller and more effiecient everything has gotten since I last checked two years ago. The batteries still have a long way to go but we need only two solar panels to charge our power tools, bikes, and a fridge, or at least that is the claim. we will just have to see! I really hope I can also use my sewing machine!!

Yep it is always best to wait and watch to see if it is viable for a large installation. Unless of course you can get a solar survey done by a solar installer.

Plenty of cheap panels are available these days which makes it less of a financial hurdle than it once was. I agree about the batteries having a long way to go but some of those power banks (just for solar) are really nice and maybe a better investment because they can have the charge controller, inverter, fuses and breakers all built into them.

Currently I have a small solar panel (for battery maintenance) and a large panel that I have used extensively in the past to get me by. It is just enough to keep a phone charged and provide me with lights at night but it sure beats no power. I gotta get new batteries though because mine are all trash.

That sucks that they will not allow power without the other things in place, how do they expect you to do work without power? Now I am upset.rrrrrr

The man wears an entire suit, the dog just pants.

I get why they do it that way because otherwise people would skimp on (or go without having) a septic system. Gonna look into getting power put in for agricultural purposes but am unsure on what that will require or if the zoning will allow for it.
