I don't know whether religion can be blamed for trying to avoid discussing death. Early Christians adopted the saying, memento mori, and built graveyards around their churches. Pagans had gods of death and crossing over. I wonder whether increasing secularization has people avoiding thoughts of death because there is so much religious connection there.

Good point. I'd bet it's likely the disconnection from the land that has driven much of the problem. Even as a farmer it's not exactly the easiest thing though I am quite capable of butchering. I just can't help but feel the more technologically advanced humans get the less connection we have to the inevitable.
