Hello Hive
I have never seen a cereal grow this tall like guinea corn has always done
Before sewing my friends dress, which I talked about in the needlework community yesterday evening, we had earlier gone to the farm for routine checks on guinea corn and any further work we could do on it for proper growth before harvest.
Harvest of guinea corn is often in the month of December or January if the guinea corn wasn't planted early. This makes me wonder about what can be the perfect timing we can always use for planting our guinea corn. I really do not appreciate it when Harvest spills over into a new year and has us working in the farms while people are still enjoying their new year holiday.
For a crop that takes about 6 months before it gets to maturity, I believe that the most appropriate time to plant this should be in the very first week of July or late June.
The Guinea corn plant is one that can survive on very little amount of rainfall compared to corn as a crop of similar specie. Our corns performed poorly this year, as soon as the drought began in July.
For the farmers who were able to plant their guinea corn in late June and it was fortunate to germinate, all of the guinea corn survived the drought and has been growing well and at the seed production stage now. The challenge I had was not being able to plant before the drought started, and that has been the reason I was gifted a portion of the guinea corn farm.
Aside from planting, people can also transplant guinea corn. Grow it in a nursery like we grow vegetables and then transplant them in the month of August at the latest. The challenges with growing them in the nursery are that we have to work out our timing such that there will be adequate supply of rainwater whenever we are ready for harvest.
The guinea corns planted in late June can be harvested in the coming month, while the ones planted in late July will continue to grow and mature into the month of January.
While corn used 3-4 months for it's like a cycle, guinea corn uses 5-6 months. Sometimes I wish that we have agriculturally engineered seeds of guinea corn that can work such that that long period of maturity can be shortened. Due to the fact that corn uses a shorter life span, it makes it possible for us to grow corn twice within the year (the early and late corn), but because of the longer period for guinea corn growth, we can only grow this once within the year. Like I said earlier, our guinea corn is at the fertilization and seed production stages, and a routine check is always important to keep cattle rearers from invading the farm and to avoid any outbreak of fire incidents that can come from bush burning and hunting. It will be disastrous if we don't stick around to keep the farms safe.

WHich country is this? We experienced a bit of drought in the middle of the rainy season here in Nigeria as well.
Same country as yours 🤣😉
I thought as much.
