Hello Hive
I want to eat some potatoes today and how I wish that I can get some from my garden at home. Out of the tuber crops I wasn't able to grow potatoes and daddy only planted some yams which we have been harvesting and eating already. Growing tuber crops takes a whole lot of time. Imagine when you have to use 8-9months to wait for a tuber to grow and mature up.
That is such a long time to wait, and I'm not sure I can grow such crops; the methods of making the ridges, planting, and all of such often put me off, and it is so sad that I love to eat yams, but growing it is such a challenge.
This year is one of the years I decide to venture into personal farming and grow some crops for commercial purposes different from the farm we have often run together with my dad for the family. I have my personal farm, and dad has the family farms he oversees. Even though we do assist each other with the various farmwork.
I have only grown corn, cassava, and soya beans on the commercial farm and hadn't thought about growing any tubers, but the cravings for potatoes wouldn't let me; hence, I decided to grow some sweet potatoes.
Picking interest from the internet, I decided to grow some sweet potatoes at home.
I got some potato stems since growing potatoes required the use of the stem cutting method.
Having filled my sacs with some quality soil, I had planted the potatoes.
Growing potatoes in a sack doesn't relieve much stress. Having planted these, I left them in an open space if we have had rains and wet them occasionally.
The potatoes grow very well, and I have the leaves well spread across the ground.
Everything has been fine with it until today, when I need to see the progress so far. There was an impressive growth of the sac potatoes; the stems have grown so well and spread all over the ground.
By now I should be having some tubers growing under these leaves, but that didn't happen. Upon closer look, I can see that rodents are much more on the lookout for my potatoes than myself.
Look at how rodents dug up and ate up what is trying to grow of my potatoes.
They have been digging into the root in search for potatoes too. It seems like they must have eaten my first harvest too; it is really annoying here. This means that I can only grow veggies here since these rats do not eat vegetables.
The ground here is very shallow with little soil; this is why the spreading arms of the potato leaves cannot produce tubers. As the leaves and stems are growing and filling the whole place here, they can produce potatoes all along the stems, but there is not enough depth of soil to allow that.
I really wish to grow some potatoes and have them handy here, but I'm not sure about what to do with the rodents attacking the tuber before maturity or the availability of soil for the growing stems to put out new tubers.
