Hello Hive
After all the rigorous work of farming comes the challenges of preservation. It is either you eat up all you have grown at the same time to prevent it from going bad (which is totally impossible) or you seek some good means to preserve your staples so that they can last you for a while.
Preserving harvested crops, especially staples, is one thing I have thought would be the easy thing to do, but it seems like almost nothing comes without its own challenges. We have to take caution in almost everything.
Yesterday I opened up the store in which I have locally preserved some of our beans, and lo and behold, a good number of weevils greeted me. They have taken over the entire beans 🫘 🫘 🫘 🫘.
This is a part of the beans that I have followed some advice and preserved locally. We preserve beans locally by pouring them in an airtight container and then adding a good amount of hot chili 🌶️🌶️🌶️ to make the environment not suitable for weevil growth.
We had to divide our beans into two portions, preserving some with this local method and the others with the modern chemical method using booms.
For the local preservation method, it is the safest method, and you can still fetch some grains and eat while it is still in storage.
But the chemical one requires that you allow the chemical to completely expire before you can eat the grains. And sometimes I advise that we wash and sun dry the grains for more health safety.
The beans we have stored with chemicals have no issues at all. No single weevils in them. After adding the boom chemical, we have poured them into storage sacks and then added the chemical. This is a preferable method for long-term storage of grains, but you have to be mindful to make use of less hazardous storage substances.
The local preservation method is for a short-term process like I have seen, except for the fact that I have been told that I may not have preserved this very well. Maybe too little pepper or something else. Besides this, you have to be sure that there was no single weevil in the beans before pouring them in the storage sacks.
Although the local preservation method is safer we have to take extra caution if we intend to store the grains for a longer period.
