We would all agree there's nothing compared to homegrown fruits and vegetables, even if it's just a single piece!
Home-produced taste good although they may not look perfect like store-bought products. But who cares about the size and shape when our love and care are involved?
Urban homesteading is a modern wonder. From terrace gardening to hydroponics, from vertical gardening to aquaculture in small spaces, urban homesteaders have made everything possible.
Let me introduce you to such a homesteading journey.
This is my aunt's terrace garden. She started homesteading only a year ago, didn't know much, still learning. But look at her homegrown vegetable for this winter. They may not look the best in shape and some are not growing that much.
But it's the effort and learning that counts. The Gourds look fine to me.
What I love most is that she is gathering ideas about what could she grow in a small space, in pots, and what is needed in her cooking.
These bay leaves, coriander, and lemon are her new additions so she can add them to her cooking whenever she needs them so she doesn't need to run to the store.
Wait, there are more!
The brinjal and cillies are a common addition to our gardens as they grow fast and produce more. In addition, she planted some green onion leaves to pick and use as toppings in cooking.
There were bitter melon, tomatoes, and whatnot!
All of the vegetable plants were in small to medium planters, not more than 10 inches. As they don't have any lift and this terrace is on the 6th floor it's not always possible for her to go there every single day and take care of the plants.
Even with all the odds, she made it possible.
And the fruits like pomegranate, jujube, guava, etc are growing so well. The terrace has enough sun, water system, and air. But they still need a lot of active care, good soil, nutrients, etc.
Making sure to have a system is not a joke but a hard labor. All this was possible because of the willpower. We easily can buy these from the market. But the love and care we give to homesteading comes with thousands more with the homegrown.
I have a small space where I glow some veggies and herbs in the small planters so I can relate to this joy and experience. Urban gardening may seem less but the joy it brings radiates everything!
Home-produced fruits and vegetables are fresh and that's the thing I cherish most because I can't expect market food and vegetables are chemical-free. For healthy life I think home produced fruits and vegetables are the best options. In the city, there are almost no options for it but in the village, it's very much possible as there are lands to cultivate.

Indeed. I wish we could leave some space in the city for community gardening or something like that. But people are so greedy and govt is so unplanned that there's no space. Only the rooftop is what we have now.
