Hello Hivian, welcome to my blog. I am pleased to participate in this contest.
The Health care system is one of the major areas priority should be given to. I happen to come from a country where the Health Care sector is not valued and little or no attention is given to the system. The Government is supposed to take the healthcare system seriously in order for an efficient and effective medical health care delivery. Yet this is the sector where our leaders have little or no concerns for instead they siphon the money meant for the growth and the development of the health sector for their use hence the Healthcare system in Nigeria keeps facing several challenges and keeps deteriorating getting worse by the day. As a result of this poor health care system, the majority of health workers immigrate to different countries for better Job offers and also most individuals that can afford quality health care overseas travel down there for effective medical health care delivery leaving the less privileged to their fate.
One of the major challenges of the Nigerian healthcare system is the issue of lack of well equipped facilities and insufficient Workforce. This is majorly in the rural areas. The primary health care centres that serve as a first point of call in the healthcare system have been abandoned due to poor maintenance and adequate management making the working environment uncomfortable and unconducive for the few health workers. The Government should ensure that well equipped facilities and also more skilled Health workers are employed into the workforce for effective medical service delivery and it will result in improving access to quality health care in Nigeria.
Another challenge the Health care system in Nigeria is facing is the poor salary structure of Health workers. This issue has made a lot of Health workers immigrate to different countries where health workers are valued, treated with high esteem and are also earning well in appreciation of the kind of sacrifices and the risk they take to ensure the protection of people's lives. But here in Nigeria, Health workers are not even regarded. They are treated like every other worker. We are in a country where a senator earns more than a medical personnel. In order to prevent the immigration of medical workers, The salaraystructire should be reviewed so that we will have available Health workers to work with to ensure effective quality health care.
Another challenge is the issue of Lack of Adequate Health Insurance schemes. Various Nigerians especially in the rural areas find it difficult to afford health care services hence their fear of seeking quality health care. Health insurance schemes such as NHIS, HMOs should develop health care plans designed for families and individuals to improve quality health care services in Nigeria where one can comfortably seek health care without worrying how to afford it.
Lastly, the issue of sensitization and awareness should be addressed. Many people have wrong and false information about seeking healthcare rather they prefer to seek the services of herbalists and traditionalists. Community health workers and public health workers should ensure proper sensitization and create awareness for the needs of seeking the services of a health care system for effective and efficient medical health services.
I believe if these issues are tackled appropriately, Nigeria's health care system will greatly improve and people will no longer see the needs of leaving the country to seek for medical services elsewhere rather than in our country.
I invite @gloriousbee and @mummgo to share their thoughts on this.
