RE: My Most Underrated XI - Right Center-Back

Players like Varane easily goes unnoticed. Despite his huge CV, a lot of Man United fans weren't too keen when he was signed. I guess he slips under the radar because he does his job effectively without so much of a noise. And, the noise would've been louder if the popular Sergio Ramos - who specializes in kicking the crap out of oppositions - was hired in his stead.

These days, defenders are judged on how hard they can tackle, how good they can pass the ball and how they contribute to the team's attack. Varane doesn't really come out as someone who does any of these prodigiously.

Sort:

People just don't seem to appreciate the defenders who are so good at marking, positioning, and being calm that they don't have to do Ramos' heroic actions. Maldini himself had said that his greatest traits and work came from doing the previous three so well that he didn't need to tackle more often than not. There are players who do their job so well, that it looks easy and unimpressive. Varane is one of those. Kinda like strikers who score tap-ins, the final result looks easy and effortless, however, it requires deep knowledge and reading of the game to get only one of those moments.
