The day started with deep realizations. I woke up early for the event, anticipation coursing through me while prepping all that's needed for the activity. While I stacked all the gear, I found myself weighing an important question: Why is it essential for us to take part in activities like this? Is it relevant for college students to take it this far? I finally decided to find a tricycle around the area on my way to Bagsakan in Gairan, while still pondering these questions.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a despondent sight, the area was surrounded by plastics, broken glass, and garbage. It was very reminding proof of how ignorant some people can be about environmental responsibility or just how far the effects of such negligence might run in our communities. This view is both painful and instructive, driving me to action.
Separation of wastes and their collection was undeniably demanding, yet it was quite enlightening. Working with fellow volunteers proved to be an avenue to realize some casual attitudes people take towards the environment. It brought home that we have to embrace values and care for our environment because the consequences of doing otherwise transcend the natural world to our very health and well-being.
This was not just a clean-up, it ignited in me a newfound interest to go beyond this and advocate for much-needed environmental awareness in the community. It served as a reminder that even the simplest of acts can create a mighty impact. The reality is one facilitating one cleanup at a time, together, we can certainly make a difference. Any little step can happen to transform this world into a cleaner, healthier place for future generations. It is our collective responsibility to protect the Earth, our common home.
