Krueng Geukueh Port in North Aceh received the Red Proper for protecting the environment.
A total of 22 companies in Aceh received a red proper from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through Decree Number 129 of 2025 signed by the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, Hanif Faisal Nurofiq, on February 18, 2025. This means that the environmental management performance of the 22 companies is very poor and does not comply with laws and regulations.
The red proper is only one strip away from being black, which means that the company has polluted and/or damaged the environment, either intentionally or unintentionally.
Surprisingly, of the 22 companies that entered the red proper, there are several companies that are already widely known, including State-Owned Enterprises such as PT Pelabuhan Indonesia 1 (Persero) Lhokseumawe Port and Malayahati Port. Most of these companies are engaged in the palm oil plantation sector. Several others are companies engaged in the star-rated hotel sector that are already widely known in the community.
For palm oil companies, they are indeed very vulnerable to getting a red proper and may even turn black. Even with good intentions in preserving the environment, palm oil plantations are indeed not environmentally friendly because they have the potential to damage the environment through deforestation, pollution, and large-scale land clearing. Since land clearing, palm oil plantations have damaged the habitat of animals and plants such as orangutans, tigers, and rare birds. Palm oil plantations also reduce oxygen production and increase greenhouse gas emissions.
Palm oil mills pollute rivers, soil, water sources, and damage aquatic ecosystems. It is not surprising that people around palm oil plantations have difficulty getting clean water.
With this reality, it is actually a bit suspicious if palm oil companies such as PT Bumi Sama Gandha in Aceh Tamiang are still given a red proper. This suspicion is reasonable because there should be an independent party outside the government involved. In addition, any team from the government is no longer trusted by the public with various irregularities and disintegration so far.
For this reason, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry must be open in announcing to the public not only the companies that received the five proper colors, but also the assessment mechanism and the extent of the accuracy of the assessment results. Furthermore, many pro-environmental institutions must be open to conduct investigations.
For the 22 companies in Aceh that received the red proper, this bad report card must be the last warning from the government to improve their concern for the environment.
There are many things that companies that receive the red proper can do to improve the environment in the future so that they can get the blue, green, and even gold proper. The achievements of 85 other companies in Indonesia that received the gold proper can be used as a reference.
Proper or Public Disclosure Program for Environmental Compliance is an assessment of company performance in environmental management carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry every year.[]
