Hello everyone
This morning, I had to take my husband to the hospital for a checkup. Nothing too serious, just a routine thing. Once we wrapped that up, we thought it'd be nice to grab a coffee, you know, treat ourselves a bit. So, we whipped out our phones, fired up Google Maps, and searched for a cafe close to the hospital.
Now, here's the thing – we've been living in Phuket for over ten years, but when it comes to knowing the nooks and crannies of the place, we're not exactly experts. I mean, we know the beach, we know the Old Town – those are our landmarks. But beyond that, it's a bit of a mystery.
Google came through with a cafe suggestion just 5 kilometers away. "Easy peasy," I thought. I figured 5 kilometers in Phuket was a walk in the park. So, off we went, following the GPS and thinking we'd be sipping coffee in no time.
But here's where things got interesting. The GPS kept insisting we were just 5 kilometers away, yet it felt like we were driving to the ends of the earth. The traffic didn't help – it was like everyone in Phuket decided to hit the roads at the same time.
As we inched along, I started to wonder if we were ever going to reach that cafe. The GPS was determined, but the reality was that 5 kilometers in Phuket traffic felt like an eternity. It turned into a bit of a comedy, with us stuck in the car, me questioning the wisdom of trusting technology, and the Thai traffic situation throwing in a good laugh with the whole "555" expression – their way of saying "haha."
What started as a simple hospital visit morphed into this unintentional exploration of Phuket's traffic intricacies, all in pursuit of a cup of coffee. Who knew caffeine could lead to such an adventure?
Finally, we made it to the cafe. I found a parking spot on the street, and we walked over to the place along the roadside. It was a relief to step out of the car after dealing with the whole traffic ordeal.
What surprised us was the sudden change in the surroundings. We had just navigated through a mess of heavy traffic, horns blaring, and everyone in a rush. But as we approached this spot, it was like entering a different zone – peaceful and quiet.
The contrast was pretty striking. The street, lined with cute shops and shaded by trees, felt like a world away from the chaos we'd just left. The air was calm, a welcome change from the hectic atmosphere of the busy roads.
When we swung open the cafe door and stepped inside, the first thing that caught my eye was the Christmas tree. It made perfect sense, considering Christmas was just around the corner. It seems like every cafe and restaurant was decked out in Christmas themes during this time of year.
We strolled to the counter to place our orders for drinks and some bakery treats. Like most cafes, this one had the routine of customers ordering at the counter and receiving a little receiver. When your drinks and bakery goodies were ready, the receiver would ring, and you'd head back to the counter to pick up your stuff.
Feeling a bit adventurous, I decided to break away from my usual green tea routine and try something different. I ordered a drink that caught my eye and threw in a croissant for good measure. My husband, being a creature of habit, stuck to his reliable cup of coffee.
As we waited, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos of the cafe's interior. It was called "Restday," and as it turns out, it was more than just a coffee joint. It doubled as a bicycle shop, giving the place a unique vibe. The focus here was on drinks, whether it was coffee or some other creative concoction. The real kicker, though, was the homemade cookies they offered to go with your drink.
"Restday" spread out over two open floors, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. The whole place was decked out with wooden furniture, giving it a cozy and comfortable feel. It was the kind of place that just made you want to kick back and relax.
The spacious layout wasn't just for show – it also made it perfect for servicing the bicycles that found their way into the shop. And if that wasn't enough, there was a "Homey Corner" right next to the bicycle section. This corner showcased home decorations imported from Japan, China, and Korea, adding another layer to the cafe's charm. It was like stepping into a little haven where you could enjoy a good drink, a sweet treat, and even do a bit of shopping for your home. "Restday" indeed lived up to its name, offering a space that felt like a pause from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
Inside the cafe, we discovered a cozy nook that screamed comfort. It was the perfect spot for sipping on our drinks, unwinding, and, as it turned out, ideal for capturing some Instagram-worthy photos. The ambiance was laid-back, and the seating arrangements were just right for a leisurely chat or a moment of solitude.
But what really caught our attention was the unique touch beneath the stairs – a display of shelves showcasing an array of figures. These little figurines added a quirky charm to the corner, creating a mini-gallery of sorts. Each shelf held a collection of characters, each with its own story and personality.
Once the little receiver buzzed, indicating our drinks and croissants were ready, we made our way back to the counter to grab our goodies. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm croissants enveloped us, adding to the anticipation of the upcoming treat.
With our orders in hand, we decided to take our coffee adventure to the next level and explore what the cafe's second floor had to offer. Climbing the stairs, we were greeted by a sight that made the ascent totally worth it – a breathtaking view of Khao to Sae and Wat Charoen Samnakit unfolded before us.
The second floor of the cafe opened up to this panoramic vista, giving us a clear and picturesque view of the surroundings. Khao to Sae, with its lush greenery, and Wat Charoen Samnakit, standing with its own unique charm, painted a serene backdrop to our coffee break.
We found a comfortable spot by the window, our drinks and croissants in hand, and just took in the beauty of the scene. The bustling life below seemed to fade away as we enjoyed the tranquility of the elevated perspective. It was a moment of calm and serenity, a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere downstairs.
As we sipped our coffee and indulged in the croissants, we couldn't help but appreciate the unexpected layers of "Restday." It wasn't just about the drinks or the quirky figures; it was about discovering new perspectives and enjoying the simple pleasures, like a good cup of coffee and a stunning view. The cafe turned out to be a multi-faceted haven, offering surprises at every turn and proving that sometimes the best experiences come from a combination of good company, tasty treats, and a beautiful setting.
