Songkran is one of the most important festivals in Thailand, marking the beginning of the Thai New Year. The festival is steeped in ancient traditions and customs that have been passed down through generations. People from all over Thailand celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and fervor.

In the past, Songkran was celebrated in a much more traditional way. People would dress up in new clothes and head to the temple to make merit by pouring water on adults and playing with water and powder. However, before watering or pouring powder, permission had to be sought. Slowly pouring water on the hands was a sign of respect and humility.

But over time, the Songkran tradition has evolved and become more vibrant and joyful. Nowadays, people splash water and knead flour, joyfully dousing each other with water and spreading happiness all around. Songkran is now a time for people to come together, let loose, and have fun.

Yesterday, I took my son and two friends to the Songkran Festival at Bangla Road in Patong Beach, which is the most popular place for tourists to play Songkran water in Phuket. As we made our way through the crowded streets, we saw pickup trucks filled with tourists carrying buckets of water, splashing and laughing as they went. As soon as we entered Bangla Road, we were greeted with a deluge of water from all directions. Tourists and locals alike were having a blast, splashing and spraying water at each other with reckless abandon. It was impossible not to get soaked, but that was all part of the fun. At Patong Beach, we watched a lively musical performance and mingled with other tourists. We saw people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate this special occasion. It was a beautiful sight to see.

In the end, Songkran is a time to let go of inhibitions and just enjoy the moment. Whether you're pouring water on strangers or putting some powder with friends, the festival brings people together in a spirit of joy and unity. It's a tradition that will continue to be celebrated for many years to come, bringing happiness and laughter to people all over Thailand.
