Normally the weevils I have seen are very small; those that sometimes invade our pantry in search of flour or grains. But this one I want to show you today is much bigger and it is more difficult to find them, by the way my pet Sentinel found it and warned me with barking and leaning out the door as if he wanted to say something. I went to his call immediately and that's when I could see what it was all about.
When I got close and saw the insect I ran and looked for my camera since I have not been posting often lately due to my student responsibilities; but now I also have the support of my pet to look for some insects. I didn't realize it was a weevil until I got the first pictures.
I have seen all the damage that a weevil can cause when it takes over a bag of grain or flour, despite their insignificant size they spread quickly. Now I don't even want to think about what this one I have here does because it is about a centimeter long, I think that is about fifty times the size compared to the ones I mentioned first.
When I bothered him, he pretended to be dead and he really managed to fool me, but my pet was very sure that it was a farce because he kept barking at me as if he wanted to warn me that he was still alive. Just as you can see in that leaf, he spent a while, motionless without moving as if waiting for the danger to go away.
Something that surprised me was that as soon as I put it on the ground it buried itself very quickly and that made me understand why it is very difficult to find one of these during the day. When they feel threatened they move very fast, they can fly and also bury themselves. Therefore they disappear before we can see them.
I even thought he could watch me and understand that I was in danger, because there was a moment when I was focusing on him with the camera and he stopped, turned and changed course. Normalmente los gorgojos que he visto son muy pequeños, esos que en ocasiones invaden nuestra despensa en busca de harinas o granos. Pero este que les quiero mostrar hoy es mucho más grande y es más difícil hallarlos, por cierto lo encontró mi mascota Centinela y me aviso con ladridos y asomándose en la puerta como queriendo decir algo. Yo acudí a su llamado de inmediato y fue cuando pude ver de qué se trataba.
Cuando me acerque y vi el insecto corrí y busque mi cámara ya que últimamente no he publicado seguido debido a mis responsabilidades estudiantiles; pero ahora también tengo el apoyo de mi mascota para buscar algunos insectos. No me había dado cuenta que se trataba de un gorgojo hasta que obtuve las primeras fotografías.
He visto todo el daño que puede causar un gorgojo cuando se apodera de una bolsa de granos o de harina, a pesar de su insignificante tamaño se propagan rápido. Ahora no quiero ni pensar a que se dedica este que tengo aquí porque tiene como un centímetro de largo, creo que eso equivale a unas cincuenta veces el tamaño en comparación con los que les comente primero.
Cuando yo lo molestaba se hacia el muerto y en verdad logro engañarme pero mi mascota estaba muy segura que eso era una farsa ya que seguía ladrándole como queriéndome avisar que seguía con vida. Así como lo observan en esa hoja, pasaba un rato, inmóvil sin moverse como esperando que el peligro se alejara.
Algo que me sorprendió fue que apenas lo coloque en tierra se enterró con gran rapidez y eso me hizo entender porque es muy difícil encontrar uno de estos durante el día. Cuando se sienten amenazados se desplazan muy rápido, pueden volar y además se entierran. Por lo tanto desaparecen antes que podamos verlos.
Hasta pensé que podía observarme y entender que estaba en peligro, porque hubo un momento en que lo estaba enfocando con la cámara y se detuvo, giro y cambio de rumbo. Bueno amigo llego la hora de despedirme y agradecerles por el apoyo que me brindan a diario, espero tengan una linda noche.
